Imber (Im-ber)

The White Thorns

C.R. Eede
This section incorporates information relating to the weapon, Imber from the myth, 'The Tale of Three Warriors.'

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Details: Imber is a traditional recurve bow made from Wien (the Rayai Tree). The quiver was made from Nithavear, while the arrows were made from Nydon. Together, they created the light archery bow set.   Traditional Recurve Bow Components:
  • String Grove: A simple creation with a 1/8" round file. Silver in colour.
  • Upper and Lower Limb: Smooth white wood, slightly curved.
  • Grip: Tight grey and silver lace wrapped around the centre. Along the centre of the lace is a bold wavy black line.
  • String: Flemish Twist. Strung against the bow providing a greater range.
  • Serving: In the centre of the bowstring is a small division with a slightly thicker black twist, which is used as the serving point.
  • Nocking Point: A tiny silver knot is used for the nocking point in the centre of the thicker serving.
  • Finger Guard: This is not a part of the bow but an additional part used by the wielder. The finger guard is made of white leather and embroidered with silver patterned branches running along each finger. This provides protection and an arrow rest for the bow.
Quiver
  • Body: This is made of inner Rayai wood, beige and smooth to the touch. All over the quiver are intricately carved patterns of tree branches and leaves filled with sanded down white tree bark. A white leather strap is attached to the top and bottom of the quiver, which goes over the shoulder.
  • White Thorns: When an arrow is fired from Imber, it creates pricks of thorns along its shaft, making it all the more deadly and difficult to remove.
Arrow Components:
  • Nock: Flat nock.
  • Crest Marks: Classy, grey and white ombre cresting.
  • Fletching: Light grey feathers with bold white outlines. The fletching is straight.
  • Fletch Ties: Tight silver lace.
  • Shaft: Smooth white wood varnished three times over for a sheen effect. Rounded and straightened. A beautiful deep, glossy, mirror-like finish.
  • Hafting: Tight silver lace.
  • Arrow Head: Smooth notched metal with a white finish.
  • Arrow Point: Broadhead arrow point with a bold black outline around the edges.

History

Imber originates from the myth, 'The Tale of Three Warriors,' where one of the warriors, Wien fought against the Forsaken Commander, Vivaleth when she posed a threat to its sacred site, the Rayai Tree within the kingdom. Vivaleth had targeted Aethel Caeloria and assaulted it along with the Ashen, enslaving the high elves and making them her playthings. While King Dihavanor Aalarelai was away with the Varcanai Guard, the kingdom fell to darkness and only a few warriors came to light once their sacred sites were under imminent threat. Imber was a traditional recurve bow made from the Avial tree, Rayai and its quiver and arrows were made from the Starlight Veil's daughter trees, Nithavaer and Nydon. This belonged to Wien. In an attempt to defeat the Forsaken Commander, Wien consistently fired its arrows at Vivaleth, creating catastrophic blows. They were arrows that pricked multiple thorns on the shaft while soaring in the air before hitting their target. These were known as 'The White Thorns.' Alas, Vivaleth managed to dodge a few of the arrows, getting closer and closer to Wien, snapping the bow into five pieces. This is where Wien was slain.      Upon the War of Faith's ending, the pieces of Imber were scattered around Eca Gardens, camouflaging into their environment or buried. To this day, none of the pieces have been located.

Significance

Imber is highly significant to the myth, 'The Tale of Three Warriors.' The traditional recurve bow is swift and agile, giving it the ability to be used effectively and efficiently within any given environment and situation at the behest of the wielder.
Imber: Imber is a white traditional recurve bow equipped with a wooden quiver and varnished arrows. This set belongs to Wien, a warrior from the Aethel Caelorian myth, 'The Tale of Three Warriors.'
This bow can only be wielded by Wien. However, whoever finds all five pieces may wield the bow once more and restore it to its former glory, giving it a purpose for use in the modern world of elves. This would be a noble and worthy act to undertake with the spirit of Wien living on through the wielder.
