Humans

Humans have a long history across Aerubus. The age of the First Men marks the oldest recorded history of mankind. While the histories of the Alfar and Dorf extend back much further Humans steal the spotlight for their shear tenacity and unwillingness to fade into the long cold night without the clashing of steel, thunder of cannons, and roars of flame to signal their exit.   Proof of this is just how many times the slate of history has nearly been wiped clean of mankind. But there have always been those stalwart and hardy members to coax humanity back into thriving kingdoms, trade companies, and empires. It was until the first dragon emperor came and gave humanity the gift of his flame to hold back the night's chill that this cyclical cleansing of the world at bay. No longer where their numbers thinned every winter. No longer did the long nights signal the near extinction of the species. Now they encompass most of Aerubus in the millions.

Civilization and Culture

History

Humanity has existed for many thousands of years. The age of First Men marks what is commonly referred to as the First Age. Each age afterward was marked by several thousand years of time and the re-establishment of some great civilization. In the Fifth Age the Dragon Emperor Xhen-Shi conquered much of the known world and through his protection and guidance allowed mankind to thrive even through the harsh winters that plague Aerubus.   After Xhen-Shi's passing a line of Dragon's took the throne growing and waning in power over the centuries. They defended the empire from other dragons, Gods of the Wilds, and the Old Gods. The last Dragon Emperor Zhen the wise saw the vast decline of magic in the Nineth Age. To combat the fall in magic Zhen promoted the education of the people and the migration to skilled labor, sciences, philosophy, arts, and industry as the empires focus. His plan worked, to well some might say. As academic halls opened across the empire to facilitate this new need for scientists, philosophers, and other skilled laborers focus was shifted from other areas. The spring years gave great promise until those farmers turned workers left their lives in the fields behind for good, sons taking over fathers positions, trades shifting to fit the new imperial guidance. Then come the end of Summer and the larders and silo lay more empty than they had been in years before.   Unrest grew like weeds, seemingly overnight. No one knows if this was part of Zhen the Wise's plan as well but the furthest reaches of the Empire began to descent. Once loyal local lords rose and rallied their people against the Dragon Emperor. With their weapons of black steel these other lands dethroned Zhen the wise and without further conflict the last Dragon Emperor left the world of men, under a self imposed exile. With Winter fast approaching however mankind struggled among themselves to gather whatever they could to prepare for the years of cold to come. Without the Dragon Emperor's Flame to hold back the night many lands and peoples withdrew leaving others to weather the cold on their own.   Aleyr of Brythun of the first human to become a saint. She obtained a force known as the Immortal Flame. A action that would cost her her life but bring an inextinguishable flame to the kingdoms of man to bring them a chance of survival in the long night of winter. After this many more rose, Alfar, Dorf. All to do great things to further the survival of all in this world for just a few decades more until the next saint could rise to stand once against before the darkness.
