Baronies of Lankia

Once united by Imperial creed the Lankish baronies have fought for supremacy over all of Lankia for the past century. When the Empire of Illium withdrew support in the wake of the Spongepox plague it left no clear successor government in it's place leaving Lankia to its own devices. the Imperial appointed native governors then gathered at Palant to decide the fate of Lankia but because of their personal ambitions no accord was made as to who would rule. Not only divided among political lines of Lankish independence versus Imperial rule the governors could not even agree as to who they should ally with whether it be the people of Elba to the west or to the Riders of the northern Vael. Since then the governors or barons as they now call themselves have fought, traded, and schemed against each other, seeking to finally unite Lankia whether through gold, diplomacy, or the spear.

Structure

Baron

Barons control the most land, and lead the most troops. These barons direct their personal armies to patrol the roads between towns and offer protection to the local hamlets. For this protection the Barons collect taxes from the populous and direct their Aides to building and maintaining infrastructure among the towns.

Aide

Aides are advisers to the baron. Often they are masters of their profession whether it be smithing, soldiery, or farming etc. They will often commandeer or requisition work crews and materials to repair, or build new structures among the hamlets and villages of their barons lands.

Mayor

A Mayor runs the day to day business of their local town. Mayors collect and send taxes to their Baron, dispense justice, enact the Barons laws, and if there is a problem outside the Mayors scope they then send word to their Baron seeking aid.

Knight

Knights are a Barons personal retainers. They act similar to Aides, acting on behalf of the Baron, but where an Aide will advise on matters of policy and construction Knights will lead Guerres and escort the Baron into battle.

Guerre

Guerres are the Lankish military. Weekly alternating between on duty and off, when on duty Guerres act as the local militia, policing the local towns and patrolling the roads in between. When off duty they work the fields and ply their trades alongside the commoners.

Commoner

Commoners are the craftsmen, traders, and farmers of Lankia. They work the land and pay taxes to the local Mayor who in turn pays them to the local Baron

Assets

Adamantine and iron resides in the mines of Fort Gevaudan while gold and iron mines dot the Basse Mountains.

History

For a more in-depth history go to History of Lankia. Originally I had it on this page but that shit was ridonkulous

Pre-Imperial Lankia

Before the coming of the Aenian Empire, Lankia was home to the Natyrn dwarves, the Salyr elves, and Lankish humans. Though no formal government ruled and the leadership changed from town to town the people of Lankia lived together in relative harmony. They fought against common foes and lent aid to each other as needed.

Imperial Lankia

Under Imperial rule the separate towns of humans united under one banner. It was during this time that the modern baronies were formed. From Lankia, the Empire launched several campaigns to Elba, the Vael and the Purge the last causing no small conflict. The Imperials previously treated the Salyr and the Natyrn harshly and met no small resistance.   Following the Bale Night and the Spongepox, Imperial forces were too thin to maintain proper order. The newly named Holy Empire of Illium was forced to pull back from Lankia, leaving its citizens behind as they retreated through the Etru mountains.

Post-Imperial/ Current Lankia

After the Empire withdrew the Consuls of Lankia came together to attempt to form a new government. Due to the personal ambitions of each Consul infighting broke out and each Consul left to govern their own province. Since then the Consuls have fought with and against each other. Eventually over time the title of Consul became "Baron" as territorial lines shifted.

A note for Players and GMs

Playing a Lankish

Aerra is based on a homebrew setting using D&D 3.5 edition rules. Humans born and raised within Lankia follow these rules in place of the standard rules for Humans.   Mountain Folk: Skilled at traversing the Basse Mountains the Lankish have a +2 modifier to Hide, Spot, and Knowledge (geography) skill checks when in mountainous terrain.   Masters of the Spear: Spears take the place of canes and walking staffs in Lankia. From an early age Lankish youth are taught how to wield a spear and because of this receive a +2 competence bonus when attacking with a spear.   Imperial Schooling: When the Empire came to Lankia it left a marked impact on Lankish education. Because of this Lankish youths are taught how to read and write from a young age and are quite literate by adulthood.

Once a criminal has been caught by the village reeve they are given a trial. The plaintiff and the defendant are brought before a judge appointed by the mayor and state their testimony. At this time witnesses can be called to add their own testimony to provide credibility to the defendant or plaintiff. Once all testimony has been given the judge retires to weigh the case, sometimes calling in those involved to add clarity if needed. Once the judge has made his decision he recalls the plaintiff and defendant and renders judgement.
