Censor

The title of Censor is conferred upon those individuals who have passed the rigorous test of The Censorate. The Censorate is a royal order established by the royal house following The Unforging to watch over magi throughout the land. In particular, the Censorate insures that magic is not used against the citizens for unlawful gain, intimidation, bribery, and the deception of the common folk of Oniron.   Censors are chosen from among the most talented individuals in the Church of Ithea as well as several magic colleges that came into existence after The Unforging with the express purpose of teaching "classical and orthodox" magic codified in the official teachings of the Royal College of Magic. Censors may be male or female and can be of any race. Censors were originally limited to being only human, however, the policy was considered archaic by some scholars and was challenged by a group of half-elven apprentice Censors, who successfully overturned the rule. Despite the removal of that limitation, Censors are primarily human and half-elven and all are strict adherents to the law of the Censorate.   Censors are well versed in magical law and in investigation and forensics. They are trained in recognizing telltale signs left behind from every school of magic. In particular, Censors are keen to investigate magi who are rumored to know or use war spells such as Fireball or Lightning Bolt, and similar mass damage spells. Censors also investigate the use of magic against the people. Censors carry the authority of the law anywhere in the King's jurisdiction.   Full Censors are at least 6th level, and will most likely have several apprentice Censors with them. Censors tend to travel in pairs and even in groups when dealing with powerful magi. Censors can act as judges, calling witnesses and dispensing punishments which range from time in the stocks, jail time, fines, and service to the King or noble house or a local temple or church. The Tower of the Censorate is the main iconic tower out of which the Censorate operates, under the oversight of the Grand Censor, who reports directly to the Royal House.   The symbol of the Censorate is a yellow sun over a blue tower.
