Vag Daroh

Vag Daroh, as well as its nickname of Undermount, can be used to both describe the city itself, or the sprawling tunnels leading away from its heart. These tunnels could be compared to the countryside above ground, and as such some could consider Vag Daroh a country as much as a city. All of it, at least, is under the same set of rules.

Population

It is in Vag Daroh that most Dwarves can be found, the race usually not very comfortable under the "void above" (the sky). A few people from other races also live underground, but they are few, particularly the claustrophobic Aarakocras. Gnomes, however, are not quite as rare as any of the other races combined, as many of them like working closer to those that craft the pieces for their complex tinkering. They are hash critics of the Dwarves' crafts, but the relationship between such pairings is usually still very friendly, and the dwarves enjoy sharing their game of Reliquary with the astute minds of the Gnomes.

The Blaze of the Forges

The city being the heart of the dwarven population, it is of no surprise to anyone that merchants from all over provide most of their crafted goods from Val Daroh. The famed craftsmanship from the Dwarves, mostly smiths, but many are skilled sculptors of both rock and, surprisingly enough, wood, which they often temper with flames, along with their partnership with the Gnomes and their direct access to the metals and stones they work with make Val Daroh the ideal city of crafts and wonders.

Circulation of Goods

The massive trade occurring around the crafted goods in the city does imply the need for some accommodations. As such, there are doors meant specifically for trade, as well as tunnels accommodating chariots and various vehicles for transport. The door leading to High Perch, Horizon Door is a special case regarding these doors. Chariots and Gnomish contraptions ensure the constant flow of ressources from within the mines themselves.

Author's Notes

The original version of this article was created as an entry for World Anvil's flagship Summer Camp 2019 event, specifically for prompt #3:
"Describe a settlement that is famous (or infamous) for its industrial activities."
You can view my other entries from the competition here.   This article and the world I am writing about have been created using D&D 5e as a base. This is a homebrew setting, inspired by Wizard of the Coast's wonderful lore and creations, with a particular focus on developing flying races and the planes.
