Tordenvejr

The Tordenvejr, which translates to stormbearers, are the most respected of all the dwarven clans. They can trace their ancestry back to Grodmolim Stormguard, the first king of the dwarves.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

From their heritage of the first king, they sternley believe that they have a duty to mediate between the other clans. They believe it is highly uncouth for them to begin by introducing themselves, and will instead find the most esteemed member of any meeting and begin by asking them to introduce themselves. Soon the assembled dwarves will stop introducing themselves and this is the cue for the Tordenvejr to introduce themselves. Due to their heritage this pause tends to come very early in the introduction sequence.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The Tordenvejr are renowned for their steadfast nature. They prefer sturdy constructions and a heavy, pillar focused architecture, even more so than the average dwarf.

Gender Ideals

Dwarves generally have a more sexually segregated society than most races in Adatia. In the Tordenvejr male dwarves are expected to strive for leadership roles through constant betterment of the self while female dwarves are expected to take control of the behind the scenes organization and caretaking. Surprisingly, this also coincides that female members are actually more revered in the clan, as they are seen as more humble, but attributed with the same leadership and strength of the men.

Courtship Ideals

In Tordenvejr society male and females are not segregated, but their social fraternization is frowned upon. They believe that while elves were made to sway in the wind, dwarves were built steadfast and so should reflect that even in their personal relationships. Every two years the biyearly haruk is held for single dwarves. It is an enormous mixer where the Tordenvejr come together. Distinguished members of other clans are also invited. These members of other clans are generally invited by specific families as the families are already very friendly, or their children fancy these dwarves. In this week long mixer the dwarves are allowed to mingle with the other sex. After a week of conversing, dancing and general merriment, the male dwarves, also known the hroth, individually speak with the male heads of the families of the women they fancy. Each head is given a piece of work that the hroth has made in his personal time. This can be anything from a dagger or a barrel of bear, to transcripts of their accomplishments. These gifts, along with the patriarchs opinions of the hroth are given to the matriarch of the family. She then, usually after consultation with the children, sends the families response. If the matriarch agrees then the two children are taken to another celebration. In this celebration it is decided, if they are from different clans, which clan the new family will belong. It is highly unusual for the new family to join the females dwarfs clan, as the Tordenvejr find it unseemly. Afterwards the two start a new life as a family. Because of the lack of familiarity of the two dwarves it is not unheard of that they turn out to be incompatible. For this there is one final ceremony before they may take a new name, or officially become the heirs to the old family. On the first day of the next haruk there are two options. Either they officially declare their union, or one of them may attend the haruk. If even one of them takes part the it is treated as though there had never been any relationship.

Relationship Ideals

The Tordenvejr believe that a family consists of two parts. The inner family, the shan, and the outer representation of the family, the gireth. The male head of the family is responsible for the gireth, and with it the finances, the public displays and the contact with other families, including organizing the biyearly haruk.
