Personal history

Neia Grimshot was born to a ranger father, Pavel Grimshot, and a paladin mother, Sonja Frostpike. She inherited the grim features of her father, and the blonde hair of her mother. She was born in the village of Wolf-Bone bridge, where her parents’ home was located.
Her father is a member of the Elder-Horn Guard, and her mother is a member of the Knights of the Dragon Spine Spire. Because of this, her parents had to take turns taking care of her, each teaching her different skills. Since her father worked closer, she saw him more often, this combined with her apparent inheritance of her father’s skills, led her father to train her as a ranger even though she wanted to be a paladin like her mother. Her mother gave her a general education and the occasional sword training session, which generally Neia failed at. Due to her grim features, she didn't make many friends, leading to a quiet, brooding personality.
During her youth when her parents both were on duty, her father would take her to Dak’Varna, a nearby dwarven stronghold, to learn from some dwarf friends of his.
When Neia turned 14, she joined the Knights of Dragon Spine Spire, like her mother, despite being better suited to the Elder-Horn Guard. The Knights of Dragon Spine Spire took her on as a Shadow (which is their equivalent of a squire) , whose tasks mainly included: carrying supplies, maintaining equipment, and training. Training included learning about tracking monsters and exploiting their weaknesses, translating and deciphering ancient texts, hunting down and retrieving powerful artifacts, and of course, combat training. Neia was generally pretty good at her studies but was a terrible swordfighter. She was allowed to continue to try to improve due to her determination, good standing, and her mother’s position in the organization.
During an outing an incident occurred. The Knights were hunting down members of the Cult of Vargar, worshipers of The Great White Serpent and some of the Knights’ most hated enemies. The Knights brought a group of Shadows, including Neia, along to see how tracking is done in person. While on the way they encountered a masked wizard that was headed in the same direction. Since he seemed a good man they allowed him to accompany them on the road.
They eventually caught up to a caged cart that was transporting sacrifices for the cult. Springing into action, the Knights cut down some guard but were stopped when a cultist took a child hostage. Unsure of what to do the Captain of the Knights called the Knights to fall back. The wizard advised that this was a bad course of action but the Captain did not listen. While the knights argued on what to do the cultist slit the child’s throat and jeered at the Knights, before the Knights could attack again though he grabbed another child from the cart as a hostage.
Seeing the knights in a state of utter confusion and anger the wizard decided to solve this problem for the knights. As the wizard stepped forward the cultists shouted that if he takes one more step they will kill this child. The wizard unmasked himself to reveal a skeletal face and said, “What is one human child’s life to a lich such as I,” and continued walking forward. He cast disintegration targeting not the cultist, but the child. After doing so he stepped aside and said to the knights “Now they know that taking hostages is useless,” and waved his hand to indicate that it’s the knights turn now. Knowing that even if they tried, they could not kill the lich, the captain called his knights to charge forward and kill the cultists. This time the cultists forgone taking hostages and tried to defend their lives. Without a hostage situation the Knights easily defeated the remaining cultists.
Afterward the Lich criticized the knights lack of reason and declared “There is no justice without sacrifice,” before disappearing before their very eyes. These words stuck with Neia for the rest of her life as well as realizing that there is no justice without the strength to back it up. Additionally, Neia’s behavior to other intelligent races after this point, was both more respectful and more cautious even if they were considered a monster. She would decide to consider them an enemy only after discerning their true nature.
At the age of 18, Neia decided to leave the Knights of the Dragon Spine Spire, after failing to grasp swordsmanship and the actions of the knights made her question the leadership of the organization. Despite this she and the knights parted amicably, partly due to the fact her mother was still part of the organization; they even let her keep her Shadow uniform as a sign of proof of her upholding the knights values. Afterwards Neia would travel throughout Kearnia, helping people and seeking power to properly uphold justice.
After a year had passed she came to Brekton, hearing they needed help defending against invading Orcs and Goblins…
