Crystal Thirst

10:32 a.m
The patient presented with complaints of a purple discolouration around the site of a wound acquired while working in the lower mines. Upon examination the patient also had strange salt deposits under both arms and behind the ears. The patient was told to remain for further examination.

3:24 p.m
The patient has consumed 10 quarts of fluid since admittance and is showing no signs of passing urine. The purple discolouration has continued to spread, and the patient is showing signs of delirium. Since the patient was admitted ten more patients with similar symptoms have been reported, each from the lower mines.

11:59 p.m
The patient has become overwhelmed with paralysis and has been pronounced dead.
— Notes and observations pertaining the first case of Crystal Thirst 142 C.E.
Dr. Krommas Silverheart M.D.
Apart from cave-ins there is nothing more at the front of a Blue Tear Clan miner's mind than that of Crystal Thirst. Too many miners have accidentally opened a vein of Purple Preochite only to cut their hand or arm in the process thus contracting the disease. Only in the last 100 years has a treatment been discovered. However, the components are so expensive to process and the disease so rapid there are not many who have lived and those who have are shadows of their former selves.

Transmission & Vectors

Crystal Thirst is transmitted through blood contact with unrefined Purple Preochite

Causes

When the blood is exposed to the unrefined Purple Preochite it undergoes a chemical reaction that converts the fluids into crystaline structures.

Symptoms

In order of appearance:
  • Translucent purple skin spreading from the affected site.
  • Crystalline patches with the appearance of salt deposits
  • Unslakable thirst
  • Delirium
  • Paralysis
  • Death

Treatment

Crystal Thirst can be treated with an ongoing infusion of refined Yellow Preochite. This treatment only serves to halt the progress of the disease. The refining process of Yellow Preochite is expensive and as such not many are able to afford the ongoing expense.

Prognosis

If treatment is sought before the appearance of salt deposits the patient will be able to resume normal activity. Otherwise the patient will suffer from impaired motor functions. If no treatment is sought, Crystal Thirst is fatal within 72 hours.

History

The first case was observed by Dr. Krommas Silverheart M.D. in 142 C.E. This exposure lead to the deaths of 25 Dwarven Miners. In the following years Dr. Silverheart was able to determine the source of the intial outbreak as a vein of Purple Preochite found in the Lower Mine of Glensomin and the mine was promptly closed.
