Hydrolynxes
The Acciphere has two apex predators: Hellabit Tigers and Hydrolynxes. In this article, we’ll talk about Hydrolynxes.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Hydrolynxes are powerfully built. They have thick metallic hides, two flippers and a tail, almost like a whale. Their skin is blue, which serves as effective camouflage in the coral reefs around their habitats. They can propel themselves to speeds around 50-70 kmph with their flippers. Hydrolynxes have gills, but these can also function as lungs when they are on land. They have green coloured eyes (females) and blue (males).
Genetics and Reproduction
Unlike other animals in the Acciphere, Hydrolynxes mate for life. If its mate dies, it never mates again. Every year, in the spring, Hydrolynxes without any pups or adolescents migrate from the North to waters around the South Water Kingdom, where they come onto the beach to propagate. They have a complex mating ritual that lasts for hours. New mature Hydrolynxes spend a lot of time finding mates on the journey to the South. After they mate, the Hydrolynxes travel back to the waters around the North Water Kingdom, where they give birth to about 1-2 pups.
Growth Rate & Stages
Hydrolynxes take about 7 years to mature and have an average lifespan of 30 years. Their life span can be divided into three clear divisions:
1. Pup Stage
During this stage, the Hydrolynxes mainly stay with their mother and drink its milk. This stage lasts 3-4 years. In this stage, the pup gains a lot of fat but doesn’t grow much in terms of height or length. The pups may eat seaweed, but that’s about it.2. Adolescent Stage
This stage lasts from the time the pups stop drinking milk to when they get their mate (from about 4-7 years). In this stage, they stay with their fathers and learn how to hunt. The maximum growth is reached during this period.3. Adult Stage
After about 7 years, the adolescent leaves its parent family and finds a mate, with whom it stays the rest of its life.Ecology and Habitats
Hydrolynxes usually live under the water, except in the mating season. They live in groups and are mostly found around the underwater coral reefs of the North Water Kingdom. The South Water Kingdom barely has any, since there they kill Hydrolynxes for meat (though there is a limit). They only come there to mate. The Hydrolynxes also build homes generally by digging into the sides of sea-cliffs, but there are other homes in the seafloor as well. They prefer saline water. Their houses are tourist attractions for people. Though Hydrolynxes kill humans, some people gain their trust and Hydrolynxes treat them as if they are family.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Hydrolynxes are omnivorous. Their main diet is made of seaweed, tropical fish and meat. But their favourite food is probably Intuits and humans. They prefer juicy and fat meat.
However, when the Hydrolynxes are at a small age they mostly feed on seaweed, because their digestive system is not fully developed yet.
Additional Information
Social Structure
The Hydrolynxes have a complex social structure. They are social animals and often play together when not hunting. The Hydrolynxes have telepathic abilities and communicate this way. They also emit low-frequency sound during the mating period and yelp and bark when in danger. When a Hydrolynx is in danger, nearby Hydrolynxes try to help it. There are no groups of Hydrolynxes. They mix well with all other Hydrolynxes.
Domestication
There are very few cases of domestication, in a sense, of these terrifying animals, since there is an aversion to it on both sides. All Hydrolynxes usually stay away or attack humans when they’re near, and this also goes for humans. However, they may give their trust to humans they like, and live with them. Once they do so, the human is treated as a member of the family.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
In the past, humans saw killing Hydrolynxes as a feat of strength and power and used their metallic hides as a trophy. Later, they decided to stop doing this and the king passed strict laws so that there is no exploitation of the animals. But before that, when a person kills a hydrolynx, they use every single part. They used its hide either as trophies or to create armour; they used most of it for meat, and the head was used as a container.
Facial characteristics
Hydrolynxes have a medium-sized snout and look like dolphins. The orientation of the eyes and gills make the Hydrolynx look intimidating to its prey.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
The Water Kingdoms
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Hydrolynxes are more than capable of telepathy, communicating in the blink of an eye if they spot prey. They barely get fatigued, so they easily catch prey. They usually attack in groups, so that the prey can be cornered.
Scientific Name
Hydro Glauci Potniades
Origin/Ancestry
Pontiuse
Lifespan
27-35 years
Conservation Status
The Hydrolynxes are endangered, mostly due to the fact their hide is considered a valuable possession. However, poaching, hunting or killing of Hydrolynxes in banned in all kingdoms except the South Water Kingdom. It is hard to kill one since it is quite powerful.
Average Height
70-80 cm
Average Weight
150-200 kg
Average Length
260-350 cm
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Young hrydrolynxes are usually a sea-green hue, but as they get older it changes into the familiar blue. A symbol also forms on their backs that looks like a sword as they grow. When the symbol is clear it is said that the hydrolynx is an adult.
