History

The Giant's ancestral home on Acarn is the high Plateau of Rhone, located in the middle of the Eastern Plateau. Summers are particularly short at this altitude, and while the Giants do practice agriculture, food shortage are fairly common for them, following low yield years. Thus for millenia, Giant raiding parties would come down the mountains near the end of summer and pillage nearby towns, villages and farms. These parties were generally formed of the individuals at the bottom of the pecking order and earned their kind a reputation of unsophisticated savages. Giant society is an extremely patriarchal and hierarchical. A group of giants, called a band, is typically formed of 12 to 50 individuals, led generally by the largest and strongest male.

From a resource consumption perspective, Giant settlements can never be really large. Roughly, a giant consumes 20 times more food than a medium sized humanoid. Unsurprisingly, the largest “city” in the Rhone has only about 800 Giant residents. It is run by a council of fifteen alphas, leading their respective bands in the city.

Over the millenia, Giant bands left the Rhone to establish territories in the Eastern Plateau and beyond. A few were successful, though they met great opposition from the the smaller residents. Some small bands and even individual Giants integrated with other humanoids. Ultimately, the Thamassan Empire subjugated the Rhone and the Giants were forced to abandoned their seasonal raiding practices for good. This forced to integrate with the other Imperial provinces to ensure that food supply was never scare anymore, in exchanged for manufactured goods, minerals and heavy duty labor.
