On Magic

All magic draws its power from the Abyss. A magical energy flows onto Earth through gateways, both permanent and temporary. This energy can be captured and distributed, to mages, regular people, animals, machines and even inanimate objects.   Magic is invisible, only mages and magical animals can detect magic without the need for tools.

Manifestation

"Opened" gateways into the Abyss constantly exhaust magical energy onto Earth. Because Earth is low on magic, the (possibly) infinite Abyss filled with high amounts of magic continuously flows magical energy towards Earth. These energies are often captured with receptors right at the gates and utilized by the owner.

Localization

Earth can generally be split in three regions.
  1. Region of extreme magic saturation: These include Imperial metropolises and acropolises, major cities, a rare few wizarding cities and the surrounding (farm)lands. The magic saturation in these areas is often so high, anyone can tap magical energy right out of the air. However in most cities and near wizarding installations, the magical energies are siphoned away with receptors.
  2. Region of normal magic saturation: Most human inhabited land would count as this. Magical energies can be tapped out of the air, but this takes proper tools, skill, knowledge or innate abilities.
  3. Region of low magic saturation: These include isolated or uninhabited lands, but also areas designated for the harvest of magic-free raw materials and resources. These resources are often used in enchantments and enchanted machinery. If magical energy is needed here, it is imported from other regions where magic flows freely.
