Opal Mountains

Where the stones weep sable

As you gaze upward to the North horizon from the Emperor's Highway, you see cliffs in the distance. These outcrops almost seem unreal as their color is as black as night even as midday strikes. The northern green trees on their precipes provide a contrast artists fawn over. Although their formation is gorgeous from afar, the rock and shadows blur what is lovely and what is to be feared.    The Opal Mountains are a picturesque scene for any traveler in Habormar. Their midnight rock faces and moderate size make them a wonderful source of stone and a natural barrier between biomes. The dwarves take particular interest in them as a holy site, the anvil of the Virtun, Ilar.

Geography

The Opal Mountains are of moderate elevation but cover relatively little space between the Easton and the Amber Woods. They are characterized by the rock-faced black cliffs topped with plateaus of invasive trees and underbrush. Traversing these mountains requires extensive bouldering and rock climbing since there are little if not any natural routes through them. Oddly enough, many of the larger balds have gurgling springs that trickle down the sides of the mountains called "Ink Streaks" by locals since the source water is stained black.
