Terra

The cradle of mankind

The ancestral center of all human expansion across the stars. Terra was abandoned by human progress a century ago, but it remains the spiritual hub for mankind and their descendants. The people who live on Terra are primarily politicians--the oldest of the old families, from the first days of the new corporate uprising. It is considered the highest privilege for a family to make its seat on Terra.

Geography

In the 24th century, Terra's surface is approximately 80% covered in water. The rising sea levels from the late 1900s onward reshaped the land area and forced oceanic populations onto the continental landmasses.   Terra's six continents are striated with diverse biomes. The tropics contain humid jungles and savannas, with climate and vegetation growing more temperate as latitude increases until reaching the chilly poles. Token glacial masses are all that remains of Terra's once-expansive icecaps, leaving behind rocky polar landmasses.   The primary urban centers on Terra--the few that remain--are all located inland. Terra sustains a population of roughly 700 million humans.

Fauna & Flora

When compared to other habitable worlds, Terra remains a veritable trove of biodiversity, even if the global biosphere has shrunk drastically since the 21st century--following a shifting climate and changing landmasses. The dominant form of complex life is the mammal, but mammals are far from the most numerous denizens of Terra. All manner of vertebrates and invertebrates, great and small, call this planet their home.   The same can be said for plant life. Hundreds of species have gone extinct, but just as they die out, others adapt over time to take their place. Some regions are subject to barrenness and desertification, and have been for decades--but still others remain lush and vibrant.   The only known sapient species in the galaxy, Homo sapiens, originates from the planet Terra--along with all genetic offshoots of H. sapiens created to populate alien worlds.

Natural Resources

Once rich in natural resources, Terra was tapped of its supplies of fossil fuels and ores centuries ago. The astonishing majority of its landmass was settled and urbanized, save for the most inhospitable locations on the poles and in the deepest reaches of the oceans.   In the current century, most of what Terra has to its name in harvestable resources are sprawling urban ruins and industrial centers overtaken by plant life. Terra's surviving biosphere is protected under Union law.
