Beneath the smooth, frozen surface of the Jovian moon Europa is a liquid ocean home to colonies of aquatic demihumans. Europa was the second attempt to colonize an extraterrestrial body using demihumans, following the success on Mars. The only part of Europa's geography tolerable by human life is its internal ocean beneath an outer layer of ice; so, demihumans capable of surviving in liquid environments were engineered. The development of Europa was hindered by encounters with dangerous alien microorganisms found deep inside its ocean, but through decades of research even this amoeba was harnessed for the progress of humankind.
