Second Star to the Right

When your guiding star needs a guiding star.

Theamuspar is a world much like our own. The spherical (well ellipsoidal) planet borrows a lot of the standard navigational methodology we use in real life: the cardinal directions, two poles, an equator, meridians, etc. etc. but long before cartography and navigation became the firm schools of knowledge we know now, travel was coordinated astrologically. Using the positions of the Moon, and Stars early travelers traversed the world with the heavens as their guide.   No star was quite as important as the North Star, serving as beacon, a frame of reference from which all other stellar navigation could be derived. Now I know what you're thinking, if it's so important how did it ever wind up with such a self-deprecating moniker? Well there's a funny story about that...

Geography

One of the 'static' occupants of the heavens, the polar star affectionately known as the 'Second one to the right', sits in parallel to the axis of rotation of the world and as such facing towards it means always facing north.

History

The North Star became so important to navigation because its reliable position and strong brightness made easy to consistently spot in the star-filled night sky. The only problem is that during the early period of the Era of Conquest just when the Marcelheim navy relied upon it the most a nearby star strangely became massively brighter, dwarfing Vai's Lantern and drowning out her light.   The massively brighter star was not as reliably positioned, rotating around the true north star, so could not serve as a stand in on its own. It could help you find true north if you knew the trick. Once you located Vai's Nuisance you would go two stars to the right and there she was Vai's Lantern doing her best to shine bright for those who depend upon her aid. As is often the case with military jargon, the name stuck long after Vai's Nuisance faded from the sky and her lantern resumed her position as the Guiding light of the northern sky.
