Valensandra Character in The Garden that Burned | World Anvil

Valensandra

- Valensandra Zula Whit (a.k.a. The Cursed Cadaver)

Once a gifted Runemancer, Valensandra now roams the Temple of The Damned singing softly... A cursed cadaver.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

She was fairly fit with a slender physique. In modern day Eden if she happens to be seen, she appears as a partially rotted corpse wearing the gown she chose to dawn as her librarian garments. Small portions of flesh near her left eye have decayed away, hidden only by her side swept bangs. Her left arm has many patches of exposed muscle tissue.
Her face holds no expression, yet still she sings her eternal tune.

Body Features

She has runes covering most of her lower body and accenting certain contours of her form in a decorative fashion.

Facial Features

She has one rune still visible written onto her face placed beside her right eye. It means "Hunt."

Identifying Characteristics

Val has very piecing red eyes, showing clearly the kinds of magics she most commonly used.

Physical quirks

She didn't smile often, not unless she was with Seranna or Magnus.

Special abilities

Val was both a Fae blessed spellcaster and an accomplished Runemancer. She mainly used runes due to their flexible application.
Her songs seem able to both inspire her allies, and induce fear in the hearts of her enemies. A common example of this would be the difference between the songs Death to Divinity, and A Song of Sleep
Her final and most notable talent was that Val had learned one of the most unique abilities a Runemancer could stumble upon. Instead of sacrificing blood, appendages or limbs to activate her runes, Val had learned instead to sacrifice her hatred.

Apparel & Accessories

In her early years she was most commonly seen wearing her pirate attire. Tight pants, leather boots and a loose blouse with an appealing dip in the neckline.
In modern day Eden, if she is seen it's in her librarian gown.

Specialized Equipment

She actually fought using a pair of specialized, bladed chakrams that were lined with runes which she would activate individually, or in pairs varying on the opponent she faced. These were summoned from runes located on her palms. She had a journal which she kept all of her new runes written in, this was also and object she summoned, though no one ever established where exactly from.
Her violin is played without a bow, the strings produce sound when exposed to someone's aura and slight pressure.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Valensandra and Seranna Whit were twins who were orphaned at the age of 13. Val would often play music and sing songs in order to soothe Seranna through her grief. Both girls were Gifted Children and incredibly seasoned with magic of all kinds.
Seranna got sick and Val walked across Eden in order to save her, even after Val was cursed by the goddess of mercy.
Afterward Val destroyed the small town of Kumlan in a battle against the goddess of mercy, and created an organization devoted to detaching the binds of gods to the mortal realm Eden. Many extremists joined this organization, eventually going public and slaying three gods in the time of the Tari wars, one of which died permanently. Though she was directly responsible for The Destruction of Kumlan, it was the regret of Myamyas death that made Val leave Mercy's Lie. Val returned to Shambala after Myamya's death and noticed the Shambalan library has been discovered, but no one could enter. It requested a sacrifice, yet no one understood what it was requesting. During this time the Tari Nova went off and the planet shook so hard that the Balane people decided to seal the Advent obelisk, the portal the Balane used to travel between Eden and Shambala.
After a few hundred years she received word her sister was somehow alive and held captive, so Val resurfaced to Eden only to find humanity enslaved. Her response was to re-spark Mercy's lie and liberate not only her sister, but hundreds of thousands of slaves. Unfortunately, while freeing her sister there was an accident and Val was fatally wounded. She was saved only because Seranna chose to die in Val's stead by casting a paired rune to switch their bodies.
Val struggled with this failure for centuries, returning to Shambala and sacrificing her freedom in order to gain entry to the Library. What felt like millennia were spent inside the library until a man named Magnus entered and was also trapped inside. The two fell in love and Val found a way for him and only him to escape before realizing she was pregnant with their child. She made sure her child also made it outside just after its birth, and then sacrificed her life in order to answer a question about the divine lies, leaving the answer as a note for Magnus when he returned.
When Magnus finally made it back inside he found the note on the wall beside her corpse. It told him of their child and it bore a truth that only served to break his heart. Val had been right, Magnus needed to kill the lies in their realms to correct the cosmic imbalance. He buried her body and began studying, no longer worried about the library as he had found a way to cheat the system.
As he studied and the days passed, Val's corpse began to do things that made Magnus uneasy. He would enter the center chambers and find her grave an empty hole and her body would be propped up somewhere as if it were reading. It would always be holding a scroll either too old to read, or about some sort of primordial monsters referred to as Eldergen which had no clear relevance to the mission of correcting the lies. Magnus was going to correct them all, not just his own goddess. Vals song had inspired him. He resolved to bring balance back to Eden so people like him and Val wouldn't have to live such difficult lives after an encounter with a divine lie.
Once he finished his reading he picked up her body and left with it knowing full well the Sphinx could no longer stop him from taking her away from the Library. He then buried Val in a specially made tomb encased inside The Temple of the Damned. The place dearest to his heart. Ever since then, even in present day Eden some people say if you enter the temple of the Damned you can still hear Val singing about the death of divinity. Her haunting tune eternally echoing off the cold reblestone walls, serving to remind Magnus of their mission.

Sexuality

Heterosexual

Accomplishments & Achievements

Val was able to attack and weaken the goddess of mercy with nothing but a truth, a song, and an Aether bomb after the goddess destroyed an innocent town. This was Valensandras way of publicly proving the point that Mercy was a lie. The goddess was twisted and Val aimed to correct that, but not before making the goddesses true nature known to the world.

Failures & Embarrassments

Vals greatest failure was that she never in life escaped the Library.

Mental Trauma

A Twins Bond..

Val received an unmarked letter and a Vis-sphere that had actual footage of her sister on Edens surface as a slave. Her mortal sister. It had been hundreds of years, how could Seranna possibly live? Val broke Shambalan law to reactivate the Advent obelisk and then traveled back to Eden to seek out her sister only to find that most of humanity had been enslaved by a new race of elemental manipulators that had adapted from other humans called the Elematiis. Enraged, Val set to work connecting herself politically to every kingdom of the new world after foraging herself a page of rights. She re-sparked old ties within what was left of Mercy's lie and brought their organization to power once again under the philosophies of, "No thinking man should own another," and "Death to Divinity." Val found and saved her sister, but not before taking a fatal shot to the heart. Without a second thought, Seranna cast her most powerful rune. Her name. She carved a rune into herself, and then Valensandras now lifeless corpse. She then sacrificed her soul to activate the rune, making this particular activation incredibly powerful. When Val came to she wept for hours. Many of the freed slaves on site recall her chanting,
"No, what did you do? What did you do??"
As if she were caught in a loop.

My Loves..

Valensandra lost both the love of her life, and her child due to her inability to leave the library. Though Magnus initially refused to leave her, she tricked him out the door, sending their child out the doors of the library no more than 8 months later. She struggled many times with her immortality, only finding peace in the words of her love. When immortality would make her question their bond she would often ask him,
"Do you still love me?"
To which he would always respond word for word,
"My darling, no matter how many lives I wake in, each and every one I will love you. I love you with my soul not my body, Val... I could die and die again and still, my greatest discomfort is our partings."
After giving birth Valensandra took the child to the doors and marked her with the new rune, naming her Annasandra Whit. A mix of her and her sisters namesake. The rune allowed the infant to tap into the powers of Runemancy without the unwilful binding of the library. Val kissed her baby for the first and last time, and then slid her through the doorway. She remained strong until her baby was out of sight and then broke down against the invisible wall, swearing at the very least she would answer the final question. She knew Magnus would be back for her, but as long as she lived she would always be bound here in this cursed library. She created one final rune which made it so upon activation it would inscribe whatever she was presently thinking into the stone surface of a wall in the center chamber, and then asked the book of answers one last question. "How do I correct the imbalance of divine lies?" The book answered her, she read the pages, and then she died with a smile on her face.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

  1. Learn the secrets of elder runes
  2. Kill the lies
  3. Inspire her love

Likes & Dislikes

Likes Dislikes
Music, runes, magic, blue, Slavery, stupidity, lies of any sorts,

Virtues & Personality perks

Despite her rage she always looked out for the little guys, and she played the violin like a champ.

Vices & Personality flaws

When angry, Val could be quite the sadist.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Valensandra had ties all throughout Birtham during her free years. She gained access to the inner halls of most kingdoms of Edens surface. She founded and was a large part of Mercy's lie for several hundred years.

Family Ties

Religious Views

Val Believed that Mercy was a lie, Mercy and 6 other gods. Originally Valensandra hated the gods and the hate fueled her power for many years, but after her stay in the library she learned to understand that much like the dark magics she coveted so dearly which were crudely misunderstood, most gods respected their domains and the cosmic balance meant to be upheld. Only the lies needed to die.

Social Aptitude

Easily one of the most confident women of Balane blood, Val had earned her right to be proud of her talents. Not prideful, proud. She used this confidence with an air of grace to appeal to kings, nobles, and commoners alike with great success. If her words didn't work, her songs would.
In modern day Shambalan history texts she is still known as one of the most charismatic humans to ever walk Edens soils.

Mannerisms

Valensandra had a way of speaking that made everyone one in the room not only want to listen, but also feel heard.

Hobbies & Pets

Val used her spare time to write. She was either writing music, or writing runes. It depended on her mood which it was.

Speech

Val had a very bold tone when speaking in general, the kind of tone that demanded the attention of those around her. When she sang, however, she suddenly embodied the hope her sister had for the world. She had a mild Belani accent and believed that though sarcasm couldn't cure stupid, it could sure help her cope with it.

"Today is going to be a good day."

"Humanity is worth just as much. Condemning a race for the acts of the few whos fear made puppets of their flesh only perpetuates that same fear and hatred."
~Val

Wealth & Financial state

Val herself had no notable income on person, but was always able to access the resources of Mercy's lie. This allowed her to live more than luxuriously had she wished, but instead most of her free years were spent aboard the, BB.Freeman. A ship made from the bones of the victims of Mercy's lie.

Nice read and a great backstory. Especially liked the link with her twin sister and how she sacrificed herself for val.   "Her violin is played without a bow, the strings produce sound when exposed to someone's aura and slight pressure." thats also a quite interesting method of playing. Is the pressure and aura able to produce violin like sounds or does it sound different?

Thank you kindly, your opinion is valued and inspires me to keep at it. :D As for the Violin, when Val plays it the sound produced would normally sound alot like a Violin, however, the sounds produced by the strings actually vary between your aura state, and your soul state. For example, if I was to play it and I was generally a happy person with an "inspiring" aura state, the sound would likely be closer to a harp or upbeat accoustics/ukelele. Whereas, If I were to play with an aggressive soul or aura state it may sound more like an electric guitar, or In unique circumstances it could produce a sound closer to the base in a dubstep song. It really depends on the user, and who they are.

Could she only sacrifice her hatred, or could she sacrifice any emotion, and Hatred is what she choose? Does the violin only respond the the wielders/players aura, or does any aura in the area affect it if the aura is strong enough?   You have an amazing backstory for Val. It was definitely worth the read.

Val could technically sacrifice any emotion, however, the way Runemancy works is that the power of your runes activation is solely dependent on the value of what it is the Runemancer sacrifices. Valensandra was cursed with immortality, meaning she would not only survive most of humanity's history, but she would also have to survive that time staying mentally intact. You see, her hatred was her livelihood. It kept her focused on her goals instead of allowing her to emotionally spiral, especially after the phycological trauma from Serannas loss/being forced into her sisters body. She definitely chose the hatred. She saw it as a means to an end and knew it was the most powerful energy that she could project, at least until she met Magnus, and birthed Anna.   The violin normally only responds to the users aura pressure, but there's an exception in my lore that some NPC's have what they call a "Massive Aura." Their aura is close to 5x that of an average mortal/immortal and they have to wear limiters to keep their passive aura pressure from crushing people around them who enter their auras range. These people would affect aura instruments even with limiters on. If someone with a massive aura size enters an aura instruments space, it would start to sound as if it were softly weeping. A quiet and haunting sound. This is actually why she chose an aura instrument, sorta like a radar for overpowered individuals.   And thank you, it's wonderful to hear that the story was able to keep your interest! Keeps me motivated.

Great article and fascinating story :D And also an amazing illustration! I like that you've given the details of the runes she wears next to it.   I missed the part where she became undead. Or does that only refer to her corpses that is supposedly buried in the temple?

Thank you! It actually took twice as long for me to do the artwork because I wanted her runes added, and I'm new to digital art so I appreciate that input, now I know it was worth the extra time. :P   She died asking the library her final question, but thats where things get tricky. The Library itself is an anomalous structure, meaning it somehow functions outside the realms of the divine domains. When Val asked her question the library claimed her soul, the soul which was normally bound to her body by the curse placed by the goddess of Mercy. So her soul made it out, but her body was still technically immortal. Immortal and now hollow. She is now considered one of the Undying. As long as she remains mostly intact her body will continue to function. It remained a hollow "corpse" until Magnus returned and it was exposed to his aura, and if you read the above comment, Magnus had a massive aura. It was so powerful that he was forced to limit it or he passively raised dead where he walked. Hence Val. Her body was not only exposed to an OP Necromancers aura, but it also knew him as a familiar energy, so it "woke up" and now it does what it remembers doing most toward that energy in life. Inspiring him to finish his mission.
