Melesh & Markor's Twenty Year Feud

The petty border-dispute-turned-war over a useless little island.

The establishment of official borders took place in Anvil almost 700 years ago during The Dark Age.   Heated discussions devolved into a petty feud between the two neighbouring islands of Melesh and Markor - each country swore with increasing levels of profanity that Bevres, the tiny rock of an island that sat exactly between them, belonged to their waters and not the other's.   Bevres was an unremarkable little island, just a lump of rock protruding from the sea that was seasonally used as mating grounds for seals. The jagged rock formation was so small it wasn't even big enough to support the construction of a lighthouse (though diplomats from both Melesh and Markor argued that they already had blueprints for the construction of one).   Many folks lost their lives in the brutal naval warfare that unfolded and ultimately the conflict was resolved by Pelkor, the nearest mainland country in Anvil whose fishing and trading industries became heavily impacted by the Sea of Alendars becoming impassable during the strife.

Tit for Tat

Documents from Melesh and Markor respectively tell a different tale, but the common facts between them give a broad picture of what happened as the events unfolded:
  • -115 DA Border dispute begins during the meeting of diplomats in Capstone, capital of Melesh.
  • -114 DA Bribes to officials were uncovered and exposed, with further finger-pointing happening and no conclusion.
  • -111 DA Markor decides to physically claim Bevres island with a flag. Melesh retaliates with a bigger flag to replace it.
  • -108 DA Flag fights spin out of control into naval conflict surrounding the tiny little island.
  • -107 DA Markor's navy becomes hostile to any vessel in the vicinity, including foriegn trade and fishing boats.
  • -104 DA Naval warfare has grown out of control, with Melesh using sleek new ships made from Ves Paluvian menhirwood.
  • -101 DA Warfare begins to spread further on shore, with seiges taking place in the capital cities of Capstone and Deos.
  • -99 DA Pelkoran trade ships turned away
  • -96 DA Pelkor arranges a ceasefire for negotiations, and steps in like a parent scolding two squabbling children.
  • -95 DA New borders are officially established, with the island of Bevres and its waters belonging to Pelkor.
The peace has been kept ever since, and Pelkor now has the benefit of having control of the trade waters across the middle of the Sea of Alendars as well as passage between Melesh and Markor.   The two island countries now see each other as siblings, and a Pelkoran sculptor constructed two giant swords of stone on the tiny island. Seemingly stuck into the rock, the towering plinths face both each other and their respective countries - wich each one having a list of names of those who fell in battle carved on the back of their country's blade.

The continent of Anvil, unsurprisingly, is named after its shape on the Auricentric map. It has a diverse range of climates that are home to many different folks, fauna, and flora.
