Amethyst Goblet

Since the amethyst goblet lacks gills and more closely resembles typical fungi in the order Pezizales than any in the order Agaricales, it has been long and hard debated as to whether it should be classed as a mushtree in the former order. However, this debate is yet unresolved on the basis that it is easier to class all mushtrees under the genus Arboreomorph and ignore any species' lack of gills. The new proposed classification for the amethyst goblet is Fungi, Ascomycota, Pezizomycetes, Pezizales, Sarcoscyphacae, Procerus amethystipoculum.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ascocarp: Measures 4 - 5 metres tall and 5 - 7 metres across. Apothecium, with a glutinous texture on the outer surface and a granulose texture on the inner surface, which produces a lavender purple bioluminescent glow. Purple in colour, ranging from amethyst to lilac.
Ascospores: Found on the inner surface of the ascocarp. Produces a lavender purple spore print.
Stipe (stem): Fibrous texture. Measures 3 - 7 metress tall, 2 - 3 metres across at the bulbous base, and 1 metre across where it connects to the cap. Magenta in colour.
Hyphae and mycelia: In the immediate vivinity of the mushtree, the hyphae are rhizoidal and range in colour from clay grey to steel blue to chalk white. Further away from the mushtree, these colours fade.

Growth Rate & Stages

Amethyst goblets grow at a rate of about 50cm a year, taking 22 years to reach their full height. They can live for up to 40 years, after which they shrivel and decay and are eventually reabsored into the earth. However, their mycelium can survive indefinitely, as long as there are sufficient nutrients available.
