Inktober I: Ring

Bodies crowded the stony streets, each moving this way and that, and, to an extent, all moving past and among one another in a state of harmony. When someone with loose pockets stopped at one of many hawkers wedged between the buildings and their own stands, the rest adjusted their courses and the main body of bodies was largely unaffected. But it wasn't just nobodies in control of more nobodies - the crowd today was a mix of every type of body. But these bodies didn't matter to Reim. Not today, at least.   Reim narrowed his vision, and the green lenses adjusted his field of view until he was looking his mark right in the eyes. Of course, the boot-gilder couldn't see Reim all the way across the street and three flights of stairs up, hiding behind the bulk of a banner of Pollun gently swaying with the wind. All he could see were sacks of gyp floating down a wide cobbled stream. Reim grimaced, removing the goggles and letting the streets regain their true colors.   He bent down to the ledge and grabbed firm hold of the banner with one hand, and the rooftop with the other. He quickly threw his hand to the other side of the banner, now rapidly sliding down its backside. He quickly realized the flaw in his plans as he felt his hands burning as the fabric they ran along tore up above. His mind flipped between recognizing the pain and wondering if this was a form of blasphemy before hitting the ground tailbone-first.   Though rubbing the affected area only caused pain in the backside and his hands, all of Reim's pain was forgotten as he saw the vendor just across the street, within his normal sight. He spat into his palms and rubbed them together before crossing the turbulent stream of bodies.   Reim had always known that pushing and shoving could get anyone through a crowd quickly, though he knew there would be some bodies interested in starting or finishing a fight. They never would be able to finish a fight against him, but Reim shook the thought away. Fights wouldn't help him now, but quickly getting to the boot-gilder would. So as Reim passed among the bodies, he made sure to push past them, leaving saliva-laden handprints on any bit of skin he could find. As he expected, people moved away very quickly, though he was unable and uncaring to take in their reactions.   Within a few seconds, the ginger-bearded, two-timing, gyp-chasing fiend was in front of him. The edges of the table and fabric were laced with gold accents, likely made from shining the yellowed teeth of starving orphans. But Reim was satisfied that he would be able to fix that, here and now. This useless lack-body had taken something from him, so he was going to take something just as valuable.   The boot-gilder was currently caught up in conversation - no, not conversation. Stealing, Reim corrected himself - stealing from a young couple clinging to each other tightly enough that Reim was surprised none of their bones were shattering in each others grip. Then again, as he looked at their relatively tattered and bleached clothing, they were probably the only things each other really had.   Reim's eyes slid from the ring in the boot-gilder's slimy hands to the rest of the display sitting behind him, easily within arm's reach and out of the cheat's eyesight. Gleaming gossamer and resplendent rubies sparkled in the rays of sunlight filtering through portions of the cloth above. Reim guessed he could be on a carriage halfway to Hourstep before it was even noticed missing. He ducked under the cloth and took a deep breath, flexing his nimble fingers and tender palms just over the case. With an instant, the clasp and lid were open, leaving the spoils his for the taking.   He swept the bounty up in one hand and spun on his heel, making headway towards the west gates. As he ducked back under the table, he came up quickly and had his vision filled with stars, but he didn't stop running. Soon after, his sight returned to him, and with it, the sound of deep, throaty shouting from back towards the stall. Reim cursed under his breath and picked up his pace, the market stalls turning into a large, well-manicured series of hedges. With only another minute, he would be home-free.   Reim was still in a good deal of pain. The bump on his head, the burns on his hands, and the harsh terrain of the cobbles all were present as he ran, but he soon felt a new sensation from his arm carrying the rings and necklaces. It constricted his forearm, grasping tightly and causing him to lose his grip on his new fortune. Within the span of another step, it snaked its way toward his collarbone and chest, grasping tightly and loosening all the air in his lungs.   Reim tried desperately to stop and grasp the writhing bands of metal, but his weight carried him yet another fumbling step. It gave enough time for the bands to ensnare his other arm and legs. Reim felt the sharp snap of bones beneath the cold metal, and soon after, the warm ground beneath his face.   Unable to even move his neck, he squinted out towards the sunlight, struggling to get up off his back. He let loose a few ragged breaths before the light was blocked by a large figure leaning over him. It let loose a short, hearty laugh. "So, let me get this straight, brat..."
