Parties to the Sol Accords

To you we vow, you endless streams of light
That bathe one hundred billion worlds in soft
Yet radiant hope; through times of darkest Night
And spirit-girding Joy; held fast aloft
As fragile silk from shining webs above...
To you we thought invincible before,
We vow to hold our Vigil, filled with love,
And swear to end the scourge of bloodstained War.
-the text of the Great War Memorial, Accordia

Structure

Planetary and corporate entities, as well as other organizations of power in good standing, send diplomats to Accordia to serve as voting representatives in the Party. There is no leader or speaker, although the representative from Sol begins each session by introducing a member designated to give opening statements for that particular session.

The Party officially meets once quarterly, every twelve weeks, for a two-week session. While numerous resolutions, especially diplomatic stances regarding galactic conflicts, are passed every year, relatively few laws are enacted. This is to ensure Party constituents are given sufficient autonomy to limit secession from the Accords, and has thus far proved a successful strategy.

Laws passed and resolutions adopted are executed by a joint Party military/police force. The Party military is far and away the largest and best-funded in the galaxy, but makes up only 12% of the greater Party-aligned armed forces. The remaining 88% is divided between hundreds of local militia forces and thousands of mercenary companies, including megacorporate armed security forces.

Public Agenda

The Party works primarily to ensure peace in the Milky Way, and works tirelessly to resolve and mediate conflicts between its constituents. An important secondary goal is the disarmament of singularity devices, weapons of mass destruction that were only openly owned (and used) by the then-Republic of Alpha Centauri. In the past twenty years, the Party military has been deployed against the Sanctioned and Gith, who have become known as existential threats to the civilized galaxy.

Assets

In addition to the Accordia station, hundreds of Party-owned military and diplomatic outposts are scattered about the Milky Way. Military and diplomatic entourages exist on most colonized planets and planetoids in the galaxy. Hundred-kilometer long super-starships, such as the MWDF Pelor and Bahamut, serve as unmatched flagships of the fleet.

History

The Parties to the Sol Accords were founded, unsurprisingly, by the signing of the Sol Accords at the end of the Great War in 2849.

Legislative Body
Nominated or elected Party officials from signatories to the Sol Accords vote on laws and resolutions, with votes weighted by represented population.
Judicial Body
Officially an arm of the Party military apparatus, the Milky Way Defense Force (MWDF), Party courts are rarely used. They are only called upon when signatories who would otherwise hold jurisdiction over a case elect to raise the case to the Party level, or in cases with unclear or contested jurisdiction. It is also common for cases involving crimes against sentient life to be raised to the Party level, although this is more tradition than law.
