Tricorner

"Mikell showed me his 'Hookless Tricorner' this morning. I told the daft bastard it's just an arrowhead!"
  • Broadspire resident (a1466)
  • With the coincidental and humble origin of a conveniently-shaped stone, the tricorner is a commonplace tool amongst civilized Reuthia. Invented first by Atheren tribes after the shape of a sharp, pointed stone that somewhat resembled an arrowhead with a hooked edge, the tricorner is most often molded from copper or steel with a wooden handle, used for a number of convenience purposes such as hunting, culinary and small-scale excavation.   Once an item exclusively of Atheren culture, the extended Reuthian populace discovered the tricorner when the Atheren of the Greater Forest began to occupy the Central Plains in a208, teaching the Faern of their ancient language, history and customs. As the unrest and antagonizing of the Greater Forest tribes settled over the years, the people of Ravencrest and beyond began to amalgamate the Atheren and Faern culture. By approximately a350, most of central Reuthia were familiar with the tricorner.   A tricorner comes in an array of sizes and variants, often optimized for an exact purpose. Such variations include the sharpness of the pointed tip or the size of the hook. Tools with a significantly larger hook are oft used for hunting and culinary purposes, as the hook can be used for severing tendons in meat and skinning small animals. Steel tricorners with blunt edges and a sharp point were provided to Atheren children for hobbying and excavation, and have continued to be provided as a traditional gift for hundreds of years.   Acknowledged as a traditional, iconic symbol of Reuthian culture, more decorative and finely crafted tricorners have been known to sell to collectors and hobbyists for significant prices. Some of the most esteemed blacksmiths, silversmiths and general craftsmen of Reuthian history have contributed to the line of decorative tricorners, forged from the likes of refined steel, Blueshadow diamond, gold or even mountain ash, with engraved handles of wood, stone and creamstone.   Acknowledged as a ubiquitous symbol of the kingdom's culture, the shape of a Tricorner can be found at the very bottom of the Reuthian crest.
