Papal States

In 2062, the Italian Republic announced the re-establishment of the Papal States, which now incorporated the Vatican City, Italy, Germany, Austria and Denmark. It is the leader of the Catholic Alliance and one of the most powerful countries in the world today.

Demographics

The Papal States adopt Catholicism as their national religion. 90.8% of the population is Catholic. There is forced conscription into the Holy Forces, meaning 3% of the population is part of the same. A mostly nuclear energy infrastructure prevails.

Government

The Pope is the religious head and the representative of the Papal States to the rest of the world. The Cardinals form the cabinet of the Catholic Religion. A President is elected as the head of government and holds power in domestic policy. All the countries under the Papal State banner also elect local governments.

Defences

The Holy Force is divided into the Exercitus, Classem, Vim Aeris and Orationis.   The Exercitus, or the Army, comprises of 1,900,000 active personnel   The Classem, or the Navy, comprises of 200,000 active personnel, 2,000 ships and 1,500 aircraft   The Vim Aeris, or the Air Force, comprises of 800,000 active personnel and 20,000 aircraft.   The Orationis, or the Prayer, is a special operations force comprising of 100,000 active personnel. They perform special operations and engage in prayer after battle for the souls of those who died.

History

The Papal States were formed in 2062 with the idea of mutual cooperation and sharing of resources between the Vatican City, Italy, Germany, Austria and Denmark. It provided the countries with a framework of working very close together and enforcing strict and shared religious doctrines providing national unity, kinds of which have never been seen.   The Catholic Alliance has often come under attack regarding their religious policies, however, the Papal States deny any oppression of non-Catholic personnel, stating they just encourage Catholicism. The 10th Crusade and the Californian Sleeper Cell are stated as examples of situations when the Catholic Alliance fought without religious undertones, though some do disagree.   The Papal States have largely ben uninvolved in conflict, instead strengthening domestic technology and power. The nuclear sites are rivalled across the world, even in the Russian Federation.   The most recent event in the Papal States has been the declaration of the 11th Crusade for the Holy Land by Pope John Paul III.
