Berini League

The Berini League was created by the Berini tribes that lived north of the kingdom of Berin against Mario I of Berin in the beginning of the 1st century A.B. At 23 A.B, Mario I was made the protector of the Berini tribes and the head of the league by the league's leaders as they saw that they couldn't keep up the fight against him. As a result, Mario I annexed the league and incorporated it into the Noble's Ministry. The familiarity with Mario I's son Angeli I and his shows of prowess prevented this arrangement from falling apart along with his 40 year rule which included campaigning against the unconquered Berini tribes who broke away from the annexation or never joined the league as well as other neiboring Fren-Chitali peoples. Angeli I's mixing of different tribes in each army unit and his work on transportation throughout the empire drew the tribes closer together and cemented his and his father's unification efforts. Similar alliances were made by other tribes to fight against the league when it assimilated but were repelled by Mario I and were conquered during his son's reign. There were many more such leagues that formed to fight Angeli I but they also succumbed to him (some of them were played against each other or destabilized by him).

Structure

All the Berini chiefs and kings in the league have equal power in it. The league has an elected king or chief who is elected by the council made up the kings and chiefs or their delegates every year to lead the armies in the campaigning season. All decisions voted on by the league except for certain battle plans and the infrastructure of each tribe (think of the league as a sort of NATO). The league was relatively slow in making descisions and this was exploited by Mario I of Berin. However, as time passed, the league learned to act faster as a result of the decrease in the total amount of members in the league and the members learning to work together.

Public Agenda

The league wants it's members to do their own thing like before and not become a part of Mario's empire. This didn't prevent league members from fighting with each other. Even if the league was successful, it would still fail at it's goal as one of the league members would probably have tried to make his own empire.

Assets

Numbers, food, a central highway (the Berinus river), high motivation to win and lots of sway in their region.

History

As Mario Berinus started in his conquering spree in the upper Berinus and got a substantial amount of power, his northern neighbors were afraid that it was only a matter of time before he conquered them, so they founded the Berini League. They launched a failed campaign against the empire and succeeded in drawing his attention, making their fears a lot more realistic. They successfully convinced more and more tribes to join the league by infecting them with their fears in the hope that they would be able to defeat the empire. When they were on the brink of defeat in 23 A.B they made Mario Berinus the head of the Berini League and the protector of the Berini tribes. As a result, a good portion of the tribes seceded from the league just in time for Mario Berinus to annex it and centralize his power in the region. Mario spent the next 5 years consolidating his empire until he was ready to launch a campaign against the Vessani1 and the Ardallans2 when he died of Salmonella. The tribes that seceded founded the Berini People's Front which lasted for a few years until they were all defeated by Angeli I. The last vestige of the Berini League lived on as the Noble's ministry into which it was assimilated by Mario Berinus for a few centuries.   Throughout the beginning of Angeli I's reign there were a few more leagues that sprang up. The Berini people's front (as mentioned), the tribal front of the Berini, the Vesti-Sidisiani alliance, and two more. They kept on provoking the Berini Empire and getting conquered by it.

Disbandment

They said that if you can't beat beat them, join them. Then, they made Mario Berinus I the head of the Berini league and the protector of the Berini people. He then used this opportunity to annex all the states and tribes of the league and divide into provinces and domains as a part of the Lower Berinus Satrapy (the Berinus satrapies were later combined into one big satrapy called the Berinus Satrapy to ease with the bureaucracy of the growing empire).

Demography and Population

The League's population is made up of the Berini tribes and kingdoms downstream of the Kingdom of Berin.

Military

Varied. Since the league is an alliance of many different tribes and kingdoms, the people in the league's military force are very varied. However, most of them are equipped primarily with bronze weapons (unlike the empire's military) as iron didn't get very popular yet as they haven't quite understood it yet and it was more expensive and harder for them to work with than bronze.
1The Vessani was one of the powerful lower tribes and it flat out refused to join the league as it saw no reason to and it had good relations with the Lefansi colony on south Hu-Balai coast west of the berinus and was allied with the powerful Ardallans.   2The Ardallans are a non-Berini Fren-Chitali ethnic group that lived on the northeastern bank of the Berinus, They had a very strong tribal federation that controlled that area (which had a very convenient protective marsh on the northwestern side).
