The Caves of Chaos part III

by Thane Belanor Valmoria

My compatriots and I took our third delve into the caves to the north. This time rather than explore the winding caverns of the first entrance, we decided to try our luck with one of the other caves found at ground level.

The first one we approached had enormous footprints leading into it, so naturally our thought was to approach with caution. At least most of us thought so. Peking into the entrance we saw what looked at first line a sleeping bear. Not understanding the metaphor "never poke a sleeping bear" our companion Gnar did exactly that, before any of us had a chance to stop him.

Lucky the bear was nothing more than a stuffed pelt, however the ogre standing around the corner just out of sight was quite real. We engaged in battle with the monster and were able to fell it in the end with little injury on our part.

It turns out that this ogre was quite organized, and dare I say even a bit intelligent, at least as far as ogres go. In his laire we found a large sack with smaller sacks inside as a way to categorize his treasure. One sack containing copper, one for silver and one for gold that turned out to be copper with gold paint, as to be expected someone must have pulled the wool over his eyes. The remaining bags held a keg of fine brandy and a large wheel of cheese. Not bad I must say.

We left the ogre's lair to explore another ground level cave. The air in these tunnels reeked of death, as animal bodies littered the ground, some of their bones partially eroded by acid. As we continued into the cave, we came upon a room with a large puddle in the center. This under ground pool was easily 10ft deep. At it's bottom we could see something glinting in the torch light.

Before we could inspect it further we were attacked by grey ooze that fell upon us from the ceiling. Disgusting things really, altho now we know the cause of the acid wounds on the corpses we found. The blasted things melted parts of my armor. Altho it can be repaired, my servant tells me that no amount of polish will bring back the shine it once had.

After we dispatched the blobs we returned our attention to the pool as one of our group literally fished out it's treasure, a heavy gem encrusted silver goblet. This was more like it, I admit I was tempted to keep it for myself rather than continue to drink out of the wooden mugs back at camp. But in the end I agreed with the rest of my party to sell it and split the coin.

With our armor and weapons damaged by the ooze we made the collective decision to journey back to Glenhaven. All in all these caves seem to be worth the effort to explore.
