The Eating Hierarchy Back at the Homestead

Xiayan, as the eldest child, always got to eat from the rice pot first among her sisters. Her mother did warn her, sadly, that if she ever had a brother, the brother would eat before all the women, right after their father took his portion.
 
This theoretical brother never came to pass, much to her father's disappointment and her mother's quiet suffering.
 
One time, Xiayan's youngest sister decided she had had enough of being served last, and she claimed to have urinated into the rice pot right before it was served. This had the desired effect of letting Youngest Sister eat her fill, but it also meant her mother tanned her hide so she couldn't sit down for a week.
 
Xiayan grudgingly respected that show of insouciant innovation.
