First Letter: Malone, you were right.

by Elon Newmaker

Being part of what is basically this city's guard, for the last few days, hasn't felt as... I don't know, heroic? Maybe it's the group I've been given, or the mission we were given. Maybe regular mercenaries feel like this is just another day in the life, too. Maybe I'd make a good mercenary if that's the case. Regardless, I haven't seen such things since-
When we were travelling together.
Either way, I got paid, but the money always feel too light for the task completed. The task, this time? Babysitting, it felt like. Three became four, with the addition of the bard. The bard. We'll return to him.
He bathed, we waited until midnight, he got a massage. I had the job of keeping an eye of looking for secret entrances, and before I could truly understand what we were up against, the large one, Omnab'eh, broke a window and blew our cover. Then we fought through cultists, and that's hard to make a story about. I remember we got into an argument or two down there. Usually something extraneous, like if you should open a coffin to steal from the dead. I'm not certain who was buried there, if they were evil in life or not,but they deserve their rest like all of us.
It was rough, honestly, I was covered in blood from enemy and friend alike, but never my own. I was tired, and my magic failed me, and we still got into reckless fights. I remember the Kobold almost bled out, and we spent hours in a blood-soaked room just getting back on our feet.
Now that I think about it, you were right. You always said I had it good with you, even as I was walking away. I wonder why you didn't stop me, did you know something I don't? Death seems to follow me now, but it isn't malevolent. It's almost if I can command it, and even more surprisingly, it listens.
