Another Cell Wall

by Daisy Tinsworth

I missed the sky.

You don't even really realize it most of the time. It's day or it's night, the sun is shining or the moon is out. Stars too, and sometimes it's just clouds. But there is space outside. Enough to move, to stretch and to walk and run and jump and cry. I laughed at that you know. Crying! How pathetic is that? Crying when you are outside, and then to fall laughing at it.

Outside.

I... I should explain.

These people are my... new.... captors. They call themselves The New Champions. Allies of justice in a world of injustice and the whole shtick. According to them, they rescued me. The rest of the people at the facility too. Granted, going from one prison cell to the next isn't exactly too big of an improvement. At least they don't put a muzzle on me.

Blue Wave is with them though. Reggie. He... I don't trust it. Him. This. It's just... it's too much you know?

Here I am, strapped into the cargo bay of a plane, and oh don't worry, I'll get there, and just... The one person I trusted is back from reeducation, surrounded by friends I've never seen before, saying they rescued me. But they've thrown me in a cell, and won't let me leave unless I "Prove myself to not be a danger to myself and others." And how do I prove this exactly? Tests. Checks. Discussions. If they don't like my answers? Back to the cell I go. Blue Wave is at least advocating for me, thanks to him I'm out for now and on this mission. "Proving my worth" they called it.

... I don't know if that's him though. Or at least if that's actually... his want. Did they just... break him? Make him accept their doctrine?

Are they using him to get to me? Wasn't I the one who told him to be wary of the one's they don't have to keep locked up anymore?

I'm... Breath.

In.

Out.

In...

Out... Panic won't get me anywhere. Just... keep an eye out. I have to see what they are up to. Have to be careful. Who to trust... No, no. Stop it.

Focus on the now. Focus on what happened. What was the mission. What was the plan.

The plan... The plan was to go somewhere in the mountains. An old radio tower set up. Install a.... thing. Node? Server? Connector? I'm not certain what it was, but they wanted it attached so they could relay with the site. Okay. Fine. Simple enough, go in, pop the thing, go out. Leave and all should be okay. Granted, we came in looking like they were hunting for bear. Or... whatever the equivalent would be for me. Some... five? Six other powerful individuals, each more than capable of handling themselves... or me...

And here I am, untrained, unskilled, and told "Watch and take note." Well, I watched and took note. And you know what I saw?

Nothing worked right. But it worked... just wrong enough.

Some space looking chic flew up and moved to put the thing on, only for all the workers to turn out to be witches. Yeah. Witches. I dunno what else to call weird people in robes who shoot magic from their fingertips. There was also a massive demon looking thing stomping around, but I didn't see much of them to be honest. I may not know much about combat doctrine, but I sure as shit know not to dash straight into the middle of everything.

So I went to the side, one of the far over Witches, and let me tell you. Not limited inside buildings? These wings pack a punch! Was there before I knew what hit me, which was the witch. Obviously. You know what I realized just after that? Balling up a fist is hard without real thumbs. And when you're standing on that hand. Still, clawed and swung my tail about, knocking them down and out.

Of course, they were shouting to not go all out though. Like that makes any sense. These ladies are trying to kill us, and we're supposed to hold back? Gee, sure, let me just figure out how to do that real fast, no problem! Could even here them laughing...

Gegh... Not important. It doesn't matter.

Where... Right. By the time I got finished with that witch and crossed over the building, the rest were down and the demon was... gone. The angry animal summoning lady.... Wild... something or other. She had the device before we slapped it on the tower, only to meet some mage fella. Apparently they weren't affiliated with the other witches, not that I saw them do anything against them. So him and the other witches we're lugging back as well. Bet he won't be thrown in a cell either. Figures they-

Damn it... Stop it girl! You're not helping. Look on the bright side. Look for the bright side.

Outside. I got to go outside for a while. I got to stretch. I know I can still cry. I know I spent six months in that hellhole. I know this now. I know it.

... I'll be free. Hook or crook, I'll be free.

Just you wait
