The Train Ride and Harvest

by James Swenson

Today we took the train to Harvest. Met some interesting folks on the train. Isaac is an interesting fellow, seems very learned and a bit shy to have any physical violence, even if it would be the quickest way to resolve something. Miles was an halfling who seems obsessed with adventure, I don't think he's seen much of the wide world but he is a nice enough fellow. Finally Dalren Dragthen, a very quiet dwarf with some beauty of dogs who seem very well trained and bonded with him.

We came into harvest and saw all manner of strange things, they call this area farming country but I haven't seen any farmland yet, just more dry and rocky soil with nothing growing. Plenty of birds though, guess they are attracted to all the farming?(Where ever it is hidden) Had a good wander around Harvest and ran into a shopkeeper who treats all his weapons as fine ladies who he is trying to marry off to his customers. Slightly bizarre but he was informative and has a good stock. Once you get past the strange flowery prose about his guns it was fine. He had two items of particular interest, but absurdly high prices to match their fine appearance and I dare say performance. One called The Dark and Stormy is a very fine rifle that needs no special ammunition and apparently can fire 4 times a day with its own internal charging mana source. Yet it had on it what looked like what Matthew has described to me in the past as a looking glass to help you aim at great distances. Along side this wonderful rifle is a small deadly dagger he called Hesitance. It seems to inject a poison that causes lethargy with each blow, poison needs to be refilled I think but it seems like it would be great in a quick fight you needed to gain quick advantage in, I think Horatio would be suited to it, sneak that he is.

While I was wandering about I caught sight of a man with some vile looking beasts that seemed to himself be a man of shady character given how some youths reacted to him and his disdain of my notice of him. When I asked about him in a knick knack shop it was explained, after much hesitancy and hedging, that he is a man that steals children. Anyone who seems to not have a family is snatched by him and I assume taken away to those, vile, evil brain washing "charm" schools. The locals tolerate him under threat from the capital and it seems even several families take in orphans and claim them as their own. I'm unsure yet what to do about him. My first instinct is to wait and find where he haunts the late nights and send an arrow or a shard of stone into his eye and let his hideous pets eat his body. Yet I don't want more sorrow to be laid onto harvest. I cannot decide yet if it is time to begin sending a message that this system of orphan enslaving will not be suffered by me. Once I begin I don't think I will be able to hold back the growing anger in me at this injustice good people have allowed to continue out of fear or even laziness to prevent evil.

All I know is I will not permit one that torments children, especially orphan children, to reach a natural end of the span of their days.

The man who explained the shepherds role to me has made an amazing material he calls Ashbone with which I will be able to fletch new arrows that may be even better than the last of my wooden ones. I will begin to fletch them and check back on his progress of making a bow from this wonderful material after we win this strange ball game we have found ourselves entangled in. The good news is if the bets we placed come to fruition we will have those excellent weapons I mentioned before and more besides. If it all goes well this shepherd may have a sudden and short encounter on a dark and stormy night. I will not hesitate.
