#1: New Beginnings

by Lunaria Isatis Annua

This journal is written in mostly Samsaran. Anything in another language will be indicated as such.

Fallen-tree,

Meteor and I have taken a step into a new life. One where we can grow stronger, I think. Whether it will be strong enough to remedy all of the impurities my soul has left upon this earth, I do not know. Isatis... I sometimes hear the remnants of her whispers, a lasting reminder of the mockery she made of this gift of life. No matter. It will be remedied, and my soul will know harmony once again.

This new life, though. As I was travelling, I noticed talk of a mercenary group - the Loaded Deck. They are powerful, obviously - otherwise this would be pointless. Meteor and I joined after a brief test of our capabilities, and were grouped with strangers. None of them seem overly concerned with the state of our world, nor with their own souls. They worship false deities and preach heresy of the sort that would spell their death in the Protectorate. It is not my cause to judge them, so I shall warn when needed, but not force it.

The rest of what happened in my induction is not to be written lightly. It was a retrieval mission that resulted in strange illusions upon us all.

Written in Druidic

Whether the group of us actually met demigods is something we may never find out, given their nature. However, if that was truly a shard of the immortal's blade that we discovered, with enough power to draw out other entities? I am concerned for how the Empire is handling their leader.

It was certainly an interesting start to our group's career. Oh! I should write about them.

First, Sergeant Collier is the leader of our group. He's a fairly ordinary man who seems to be more lawful and serious in nature. We saved his life on the mission, and have given him the new name of Collie. Two of the group members seem to particularly enjoy aggravating him, which is understandable, given that he did not seem to be overly welcoming to those of us with blue skin. Well, the aggravation is understandable. The flirting is less so. I believe he will get used to it.

Lance-Corporal... Sefris. His name is longer. I'm not going to ask him how to spell it. He's an obsessive heretic who preaches about the Empire and Emperor. He seems good-hearted, if a little silly. I'm going to train Meteor to pick him up if I have time after the usual training session.

Faraahi. Flirty undine - is she a teenager? I will ask one day. She's nice. I like her. We share a room, and we both have animals. I hope Meteor doesn't try to eat her otter.

Logan? Dio? Wait, it's both, isn't it? He's weird. Very... chaotic, I think. Maybe he is also a teenager. We have two years for them to grow up, at least!

Siegfried. He's quiet, so I like him. His alchemy is a little dangerous, but I think we could come up with a few good battle tactics together. I can't tell what he is, though, not behind that mask. We'll fix that later.

There's a butler, too. I don't remember his name. He talked to me in the forest after... the thing. He doesn't really seem like he's meant to be here. Butlers generally don't fight, from what I remember of those stories.

I think this covers most things. I have two years with this group before I can decide to stay or leave, so I'm going to train hard and make the best of it. And get more plants for our rooms-- oh. Our rooms are on a ship called the Dealer's Run, and it is very metallic. I can't sense the land very well through the layers of obnoxious technology around us. There are some plants, yes, but it's not enough. I think I'm going to need to take many trips onto any exposed balconies they have so that I can feel the wind again. It's almost like being suffocated, not having that link be present.

...Thinking of links. I hope Faraahi is a heavy sleeper, and that our walls are well-insulated or enchanted. Syalia has complained a fair amount about the words I say when asleep, and I think this new roommate will too, in time. Dreams are just another path to my past, so... it is just something my new team will have to become used to. Or I can encourage Meteor to make noise at night to hide it, though that would be more annoying for me, too.

I'll think on it more. For now, I think I have wasted enough ink.

Signing off,
Lunaria Isatis Annua
