The Sharp End

by Arkadius Farcleaver-Hogg

“I’m fine.”
Are you, though? Just last week you threw a bottle of ink at the wall, because you thought…
“Can we not discuss that again? That’s not one of the highlights of my time in Kantas. I’m really fine. I went to K’ul Goran, didn’t I?”
You did, but you never really explained what happened there. Come on, Arky, it’s been weeks since you let me join you on an adventure out of the city.
“...Okay, fine Ida. The next time I leave the city, you can come with me. I thought you enjoyed roaming the city more when I was-“
No, it’s really, really boring compared to some of the things you get up to. Now, let me get comfortable in your pocket, and then as you’re flying you can tell me about K’ul Goran.
Oh, no. Last time I got distracted while I was in the air, I nearly plummeted into a roof.
You said that was because you remembered pain from your past, and felt it like it was real.

So, K’ul Goran. We portalled there from Daring Heights, as normal. Girelle himself met us on the other end, which was… very out of the ordinary. Usually we have some kind of assistant, a sergeant or something. Anyway, I digress. We were led by Girelle to his private chambers, and told what our mission was to be. We were to escort him to a meeting with the Mayor of Jarvenol. I’m not one for formal occasions, but hey… sometimes I can look intimidating. We were to set off immediately, and arrive late in the evening. We did so, and arrived at some diplomatic style buildings. Most, actually all but one were destroyed in the war.

That is a shame. I never got to see K’ul Goran properly, my first experience of it myself was that war. And I spent most of it in Sheryl’s…
Yes. You did. Moving on. The next morning, we all attended the meeting. Girelle was trying to sell Aurelia’s magical abilities to Jarvenol, to allow them to summon and make permanent a great fortress. She high-balled the cost, starting the negotiations at a very remarkable price (I will never see that amount of gold, let me say that much), and everyone else around me (Matthew, Laurel, Mace, Bones and Wren) all looked intimidating enough. I was… distracted by something, and missed the beat. Didn’t seem to harm the negotiations too much though, the Mayor made excuses and left, and Girelle as we were leaving seemed confident.
He then dispatched us on our TRUE mission, which was to investigate some of the ruins.

Ah. I knew it sounded too boring to be a proper mission.
We had been advised that robed and hooded figures were investigating and skulking around some of the ruins unleashed and revealed by the war. Perhaps at least one red mask had also been spotted. So, only natural…

That you would all be summoned. Super Vanguard hunting squadron that you are.
Yeah, no… Later that night, we snuck around the city, criss-crossing different streets to cover as much land as we would, to try and find where they were searching that night. Indeed eventually we did find them, and we cautiously approached. Laurel became some… animal, and snuck in as close as possible, trying to overhear what was going on. Mace asked for advice on what one of the masks looked like, and I described to the best of my ability. He conjured up a disguise for himself, and went in talking to the guy who was left. Inside the property was some kind of… hole downwards?

You don’t seem to be remembering this very clearly.
No, it was around this point where… I think I started missing Sheryl again, and I was hit a bit with… cloudy mind. The next thing I really remember is us being in this big room, a guy running away, and me unleashing a few Scorching Rays in anger. The rest is… a bit of a blur.

And this is exactly why I need to join you on adventures. You’re incapable of remembering things and explaining them to me afterwards.
