The Legend of Six Lizards

Vigilant watcher
The sentinel stands against
All who would invade

The Jade Eye is dead.

Six Lizards fell, victorious, over the corpses of his nemesis, Ten Thousand Demons. But I will not despair, for there can no death more honorable for a warrior. Such a death must be committed to record, to serve as an example and inspire future generations of our order. I take this as my first task as Master of the Secret Sect of Celestial Spirit Sentinels.

To defeat our foe, Six Lizards needed not just the soul of a warrior, but the soul of a hunter. And like a hunter, he stalked his prey long before he confronted it, learning its nature, seeking to gain every advantage over his foe. When he struck, he chose a terrain that neutralized his foe’s strengths, and prepared the field to exploit its weaknesses. When I finally called the demon’s True Name, Ver’Soltak could not resist answering. Realizing it had not been summoned unwittingly it howled rage, but we stood firm. Then before us the demon shape-shifted to reveal its true form: ten swarming fiends with the heads of a goats, bodies of apes, barbed tails and reeking of rotting meat, Abyssal screeches filling our minds.

Before I could draw my blade, Six Lizards leapt into action. In the span of a single breath, two of the wretched creatures laid slain. I moved to engage the fiend moving in on my master’s flank and cut it down. The rest were driven into a frenzy, but on the flat, featureless ground, they had no way to use their great leaping ability to gain the upper hand. We were nonetheless both forced back on the defensive, as barbed tails swung at us from all sides. Amid the furious assault, multiple blows landed but, bolstered by my divine aura and the potions Six Lizards had prepared us with, we did not succumb to the poison. As the battle raged, master and apprentice moved in perfect harmony. With each fiend killed the swarm grew more feral, until it was no more than a beast fighting for survival. Finally, bloodied and tired, we stood before the last fiend. It launched a final, desperate attack that Six Lizards was unable to block. The barbed tail sunk into his chest, and this time, the poison took hold. He summoned the last of his strength and decapitated the demon before collapsing to the ground.

Thus ended the life of my Master, Six Lizards. I must now assume the role of Master of the Secret Sect, and continue the work of my ancestor Kwi, started all those centuries ago. My next duty will be to find an apprentice of my own to carry on the legacy and mission of our Order after me. The realm already faces a new extraplanar threat in the Long Ren, and we will surely be needed in the wars to come. In defeating this invasion, I will honor my ancestors and my fallen Master.

I am the Jade Eye.
