You are from Barovia, namely, a little town named Berez. It's been five years since you left home in search of a cure, and still you've found nothing. Once, during your stay in Barovia, you had pleasant dreams of a better place, a better life, and while they left you confused... they also left you longing to go back.

Backstory
Pel was born in small town in a distant land. His father was an alchemist and his mother was a doctor. So, form an early age, Pel was instructed in the ways of alchemy and medicine. However, when Pel was 13 years old, a mysterious plague struck the town, and Pel's father left in search of a way to cure this plague, leaving Pel and his mother alone in a plague-ridden town.
However, Pel and his mother decided to stay and attempt to help rid the town of this strange disease. In order to do this, Pel turned towards arcane magic for solutions, while his mother continued to apply her medicinal knowledge to help the suffering people of the town.
Unfortunately, when Pel was 18, his mother fell ill with the same disease that afflicted the rest of the town. This drove Pel even further into his research of magic and alchemy in order to cure his sick mother. Unfortunately, despite his knowledge of these subjects, Pel lacked experience, and so his experiments often resulted in failures which burned and scarred his body. Eventually, Pel donned the cloak and mask of a plague doctor to hide his scars and protect himself from the plague.
Finally though after weeks of fighting off the disease, his mother died. With her dying breath, she tasked her son with finding a cure for the disease that ailed the town. So, just like his father before him, Pel abandoned the town in order to find a cure for this disease.
His search led him to an alchemist who was a former colleague of his father. Under the instruction of this teacher, Pel continued his studies of arcana, history, medicine, nature, and alchemy in order to find some way to cure this horrible disease. He was also instructed in the use of armor, weapons, and the ways of a thief, as it would aid him on his journey. However, after four years of study and training, Pel decided it was best to leave and try to find a cure on his own. So, that is exactly what he did, he left in search of a cure, not knowing where his journey would take him.— Pel Dakav, D&D Beyond
