Scholar and researcher of dark magicks. Though magic is the preferred method of defense/offense, Raef is capable of defensive hand to hand combat. Oft times prefers his work and the creatures of otherworldly origins over socializing in "normal" society.
Raef Longshadeaux is from a military family, raised mostly by his mother. When the shadows first began to whisper, Raef became obsessed with their origins. From his early teen years, he began to show great aptitude for magic. Raef's father encouraged him to go out and learn more from the Magic Cloisters. By his early twenties, Raef had dedicated himself to studying dark Magicks, brought upon by the whispers he heard as a child from the shadows. While adventuring, Raef found himself in several close calls and seeing his lust for adventure wane, chose to hole up a cottage for studies. As his knowledge grew, so did his collection of artifacts, books, and scrolls. This lead him to apply for a position as a scholar and professor at an Institution of Magicks. Unfortunately, tragedy would strike at the heart of this city within a few years of being admitted to the institution. Raef learned how to pull forth the shadows but rarely summoned them into full being, having learned that other Shadow Casters would lose control of their summons and untold destruction wreaked across nations. He was working on a foolproof summon ritual of a powerful Shadow, but Raef had yet to work out the "Enslavement" portion of the spell that would render the Shadow into complete subservience to the caster. While out on one of his routine errands, a fellow Shadow Caster that was jealous of Raef, snuck in to the study of Raef's and stole his incomplete summoning scroll under the assumption that it was ready to cast. Later that evening, Raef was in his study pouring over some ancient scrolls when his Shadow, Mizzen, broke through the veil enough to warn of an impending doom with a whisper, "Shadows, Thief, Summons." Unease settled over Raef as his hairs raised, quickly rising from his study and rifling through his scrolls. Where was it, it has to be here, he thought. Suddenly, a loud crack the sound of a ship splintering in half echoed through the streets of the city and the sky was blotted out by what appeared to be a black swirling vortex forming a sphere around the city. It dawned on him that someone had begun the incomplete ritual. Raef hoped he could make it in time as he raced to the summoning area. However, just as he was reaching the epicenter of the ritual, a sound so unearthly came barreling from a rip in the vortex and Raef thought for a moment he might go mad from fear. He called to the Shadow Caster to beg him to end the ritual, yet he could tell as the words left his mouth that the Caster's life was being drained by the vortex and shortly dropped to the ground as a desiccated corpse. Raef's eyes were drawn to the tear in reality as a giant Shadow emerged. The Giant Shadow bellowed a terrifying sound and began to summon forth smaller and more various Shadows, sending them forth amongst the town. Raef, worried that he might not be enough to stop a failed summons, pulled from his darkest moments, digging for the powers of darkness to call forth the strength to subdue a Shadow of this magnitude. As he reached out with his magick, Raef found that all he was really capable of was putting the Shadows into a quarter speed suspended animation. The Big Shadow took notice of Raef and was beginning to actively fight against the Magicks, and Raef knew that he might be able to take the swarm of Shadows streaking across the town, but without help the Big Shadow would continue to wreck the surrounding lands. And as the Shadow Swarm grew, it began to swallow buildings whole. Raef accepted that this would likely cost him his life, but had to attempt to Enslave the Big Shadow. Already irritated by Raef, the Big Shadow began to thrash about as Raef attempted to wrest control over the Big Shadow. The will of the creature was proving difficult to overcome, but it felt as if everything was in a stalemate. Just as a small contingent of Light Warriors made their way to the borders of the town, they could catch glimpses through the swirling barrier of a magick user and a Big Shadow. From the point of view of the Light Warriors, it looked as if the Magick User was controlling the Big Shadow, and as soon as they made the decision to move forward to wipe this darkness from the land, the swirling sphere surround the town solidified into an oppressive darkness and then blinked out of existence. All that was left for the Light Warriors' viewing pleasure was a crater with a single robed magick user lying unconscious. Believing Raef was the culprit, he was taken into custody and locked up.

Raef is rarely passionate about things especially outside of his research into Dark Magicks. The day to day life of mankind does not interest him and thus he tries to fall back on to what little he remembers as social norms and what the local laws are for interactions.
