Although Edwin was born in humble conditions, unlike others he never saw any reason to break from them. His father was a chef for a restaurant in the city, simply called "Sal's" even though it was now Sal's grandson Joe running it, and because of the local traditions Edwin apprenticed under his father to one day become a chef himself. Before he knew it, he was working alongside his father in the kitchen, and once his father's age caught up with him Edwin became the head chef himself. Working at Sal's was enough for Edwin, slowly mastering both the skills of cooking and the ability to make a team of others work together efficiently.

But everything changed when he met her. A woman who had already ordered and had no means to pay, but did not just try and run. Somewhat intrigued by her, he paid for her meal, and when he left for the day he found her outside waiting for him. She told him her name was Marcella, and she had been running from someone dangerous who wished to see her dead and needed someone to stay with until she could be sure she was safe. Understanding the implication, and feeling charitable, Edwin offered her to stay with him.

As the two stayed together, their relationship changed from one of utility to something far more, both of them finding love for one another over time. Eventually they were married, had two children, and were set to live happily for many years to come. However, that danger from her past that seemed to have given up had done no such thing. One night when Edwin had taken their two boys to work as his apprentices to cater the party of a minor noble, he came home to find her dead.

After he had finished his grieving, he knew what he had to do. Joining the law would give him and his boys a way to get away from the city and find a place untainted by memories of tragedy, as well as maybe one day being able to bring whoever killed her to some form of justice.
