A veteran of the Soul Wars, and former captain as well a battlemage aboard the Amethyst Fleet of Lethis, Numan and his crew were cut down in a diplomatic plot gone terribly wrong.
Their city was breached by the armies of the Mortarch of Grief due to their actions, and she claimed all of their souls to her service... Until the Captain found the Maelstrom (or It found him).
Mastery over the Maelstrom , and admittance to the Abyssal Fleets, allowed Numan to wrest command of his subordinates from Olynder in exchange for centuries of service to the mast.
