Personal history
Ka'are was born to one of the most renowned noble houses in the Kingdom of Renyth. The Astralguard house is known for carrying a bloodline with incredible amounts of arcane energy traced back to ancestry with a Cobalt Dragon. This bloodline has given rise to many incredibly powerful sorcerers over the years and is especially revered in Reneth due to the ubiquitous worship of dragons in the kingdom.
Growing up, Ka'rae was similarly capable of channeling magical energy from an early age, but unlike those before him and his other kin of a similar age, he had always had a great deal of trouble controlling his magic. Attempting to cast even rudimentary spells could often result in fire erupting from his hand or harmless magical creatures being summoned. He also always had a faint glow around him, which was attributed to his unstable magic.
This was no cause for concern in his very early years as a child, but as he began to get older, his lack of control would become much more of an issue. His uncontrolled energy would get more destructive and Ka'rae began to resent his powers rather than be proud of them like the rest of the Astralguard Sorcerers.
---------------------------
Over the years, he would occasionally talk to his parents about this, but they would never give him a straight answer and would be visibly uncomfortable with the topic being brought up. As Ka'rae moved into his teenage years, the frequency of his questioning about his magical abilities would increase, as did the unease of his parents.
It was at the age of 17 when Ka'rae decided to take matters into his own hands and find the answers he wanted himself. He ventured to nearby magical schools and libraries to find information about what could have caused this, but his time was not rewarded. Studying the nature of magic like this did not come easily to Ka'rae since he had never had to study magic before and neither did his kin he grew up with.
His efforts did not yield much, however, a letter addressed only by "A Family Friend" appearing in his chambers gave him the lead he had been looking for. The letter directed Ka'rae to the secret location his parent's chambers where his father kept his journals.
---------------------------
When his parent's were away, Ka'rae found his father's journals and went back to the first few months after his birth. He discovered that he was not born with the same magical affinity that others in his bloodline had. What magic in him was incredibly faint and his potential as a sorcerer was minimal. He did, however, have that faint glow about his since birth.
Given the expectation of the Astralguard house to be one of prestigious sorcerers, they were mortified to think that their son would be the first to break the mold. Furthermore, because they could not allow this secret to get out, their options for potential solutions were limited.
This led to Ka'rae's father striking a deal with a mysterious cult with access to an incredibly powerful source of raw magical energy. Ka'rae was exposed to this source of magic, awakening his magical potential, but leaving him unable to control his power.
---------------------------
In a rage, Ka’rae confronted his parents about what they had done and for information about the cult they stuck a bargain with. They denied the allegations despite the written proof in the journal, but they were unable to admit to his face what they had done. Still, the regret they were feeling inside was clear on their faces.
Ka'rae began to make arrangements to leave his home in an effort to learn about the mysterious cult, their magical source of energy, and a way to gain more control over his abilities. As he went to leave, a courier would deliver a letter from the same family friend that informed him of the location of his father's journal. The letter stated that this "Family Friend" had heard word from his connections in the Astralguard family home of Ka'rae's desire to leave his home. He asked Ka'rae to meet him at his workshop just outside of the city.

**CAN EDIT THIS PART**
**Name of the Old Artificer can easily be an existing character in Renyth. If not, I can come up with a name**
Ka'rae arrived at the semi-hidden workshop nestled away in a forest near the city. The man introduced himself as *OLD ARTIFICER* and said that he used to work for Ka'rae's parents for over 20 years and worked in the family home, overseeing the collection and maintenance of the house's many magical artifacts. *OLD ARTIFICER* was one of the few people that knew of Ka'rae's lack of magical ability at birth because his parents had spoken with him about magical items that could help with his powers. He told them that he did not think something like that existed.
The day after Ka'rae's parents asked *OLD ARTIFICER* about the magical items, they all went missing for a few days. *OLD ARTIFICER* could detect the magic energy erupting inside of Ka'rae. He had sworn secrecy when it came to the Astralguard's inquiries about solutions to Ka'rae's lack of magical abilities, so he kept this to himself. Still, he no longer wanted to be in service to the family that would do something he perceived as so reckless.
---------------------------
Ka'rae expressed his desire to learn more about sources of arcane magic or of magical artifacts that could help him control his powers. He also asks the man what he knows of the cult that his parents struck a deal with.
The old artificer said the name of the cult is *CULT NAME*, but very little is known about them other than that they too seek knowledge of arcane magic and artifacts. Your father was no doubt aware of them and contacted them. They likely simply saw Ka'rae as simple text subject to see the effects this particular source of arcane magic would have on an individual who was otherwise rather powerless.
Unfortunately, he had no idea how Ka'rae's father got in touch with them and does not know how he could do that today. They are a bit nomadic in nature, always looking for new sources of arcane knowledge.
---------------------------
He then gifted Ka'rae a magical firearm to use on his journey. It was one the old artificer himself used for a while to channel some of his spells, however, he has modified it so that it can serve as a focus that could potentially help control some of Ka'rae's much more unstable magic. He warned him that the firearm is in no way capable of controlling all of Ka'rae's magic and the potential for the spell to backfire remained high.
Still, he ensured him that it would alleviate some of his issues and also encouraged him to come to visit him again in the future should he want the firearm improved. It would take a lot of gold and a good amount of time, but he has an idea of how the firearm can be used to improve Ka'rae's spells.
Ka'rae thanked the man for all he had done in informing him of the true nature of his powers and in the gift he had given him to help contain them. *Old Artificer* said it was the least he could do after keeping himself silenced about what he knew for so long.
---------------------------
Ka'rae set out on a journey to learn all that he could about sources of raw magic and magical artifacts in the hopes that he could learn to properly control his magic. Given the similar goals of the cult that used him as an experiment, he expected that he would encounter them again at some point in the near future.

Mental Trauma
Ka'rae's issues controlling his magic caused him many issues in social settings growing up, both in terms of his spells backfiring and a general feeling of inferiority when compared to his kin.
He is still very charming, a skill he has developed since leaving his home just over a year ago and deceiving his way into many places of magical study and homes of magical artifacts. However, he remains hesitant to use even simple spells such as Prestidigitation or Minor Illusion in social settings, even if it's advantageous.
---------------------------
A feeling of a loss of control is especially triggering to Ka'rae given his lack of choice in being recklessly infused with magical energy and his inability to control his powers to this day. Ka'rae often responds with anger when he feels his being told what to do.
