Personal history
Cestora is the grandson of a lowly noble in Italy. His father, Gavin, loved to break the hearts of every girl he met. His father disapproved of this activity, and demanded that that Gavin not see the daughter of the local Botanomancer. To spite him, Gavin wooed the girl and promised to elope. He stole his father's fortune and fled to the island of Britannia. When his funds dried up, he worked for the Paleontangers as a farmer. However, the thrill of denying his father gave way to realizing he was trapped with a wife and a job. When he was given money to purchase seeds, he spent it all on alcohol and gambling. He abused his wife, who was pregnant with Nathaniel. After his birth, his mother tried everything to protect her son, but she refused to leave Gavin. One fateful night, Gavin murdered her and tried to kill Nathaniel, who fled. He was found by Charles Paleontanger, who brought him to his estate. Gavin was locked away. He couldn't be executed because he was technically still a nobleman, but he was never released.
Cestora became a ward for the Paleontangers. Most wards eventually find their way into apprenticeships to serve the House, but Cestora began to manifest extreme magical power, catching the eye of Henry Paleontanger. Cestora was moved to Paleontanger Castle, and was allowed to practice his magic there. The Paleontanger children, Charles, Saul, and Angelica began to be acquainted with him. Saul hated Nathaniel, and bullied him, but he would never do so around Charles. Cestora looked up to Charles as his protector. Charles saw him as a younger brother. Angelica, however, was fascinated by the magic, which Cestora tried to teach her.
When Charles left to be a knight of the Celestial Order, Saul's bullying got worse, to the point where Cestora was forced to flee from Paleotanger Castle.
What happened to Henry Paleontanger is up for anyone to guess, but most people believe that Saul killed him and assumed power over the Paleontanger House. Angelica was locked away, and Saul was prepared to kill Charles and Cestora should they ever return.
Alone and lost, Cestora stumbled across the ruins of an ancient house. There was a secret compartment in the basement where something was calling him. It was Tebenris, the powerful Sentinel of Darkness. He helped Cestora refine his magic usage, and convinced him to return to Paleontanger Castle to save Angelica.
Under the cover of night, Cestora infiltrated the castle, only to be discovered and chased. He freed Angelica, and together they fled, chased by Saul's vicious hounds and villainous mercenaries.
They were cornered and hid in a tree while the hounds howled beneath them. Two mercenaries were with them, trying to shoot them out of the tree. His energy waning, Cestora magically moved their scent onto the mercenaries, which the hounds devoured mercilessly.
Fearing for their safety, Cestora suggested they go to his grandfather's home in Italy. With no money, Cestora bartered with the merchant Jeremiah Whoso for passage. In return for Angelica's safe arrival, Cestora would sign onto his crew for 8 years.
Whoso was impressed by Cestora. When he was aboard a ship, it sailed faster and was safer from pirates. Once, during a horrible storm, the ship remained completely smooth and stable. Whoso cut the agreement shorter as a form of payment for Cestora's actions, although Cestora agreed to stay on longer for more pay. He returned to Angelica and his grandfather's home with enough money to make up for what his father had lost.
He married Angelica, mourned his grandfather's death, and began to use his powers to heal all those who asked.
He started a family and a small community, with people of all races and backgrounds being healed indiscriminately.
There was no sickness he could not cure, no injury he could not fix. He even regrew an arm for the king of one of the local states.
But he could not save his daughter. He tried everything, be she seemed to die of a mysterious illness. During his rage, he lost control over his power, which devastated the landscape. Fearful, Angelica took their son and the people of the village to safety, knowing that if she had stayed she could have calmed him down.
Alone and lost once more, Cestora turned to Tebrenis, who "opened his eyes." The world was full of monsters that worked death. He would not let anyone else suffer his fate. There must be a cure for death, which Tebrenis provided. Now the Necromancer, Cestora built and empire to protect the people against the monsters.
There were no monsters, of course, but how could he have known?
