A Lantern in Drelev
Fort Drelev feels like a place where someone has pressed a thumb over the river and choked the flow. The streets are gray with fear, the windows shuttered, and even the children move like they’re afraid to stir the air too loudly. This is a town under a bootheel, and every stone knows it.
We found shelter with Satinder Morne—a woman braver than she pretends to be. Her tavern hums quiet with secrets, shadows, and the kind of strength that refuses to kneel. She gave us a room, a meal, and the truth: Drelev is drowning, not in water, but in hopelessness. I could feel it sinking into the floorboards like damp rot.
I wandered a little before dusk and found a shrine to Hanspur tucked between two ruined buildings. No offerings, no candles, just a cracked basin full of dead leaves and rainwater gone sour. I cleaned it by hand, scraping mud from the once-carved ripples, washing the stones with fresh water from my flask. It wasn’t much, but a neglected shrine is like a neglected soul—it just needs someone to remember it exists. I whispered a blessing for the people here. They need it.
That night, things went… poorly. We meant to inspire hope, to show the town that the river still moves and tyrants can’t dam a people forever. Instead we made too much noise, hit too hard, and left part of a building sagging where it shouldn’t. We dealt with the mercenaries, yes, but it felt less like heroism and more like a storm blowing through the wrong valley. Not what Hanspur would call a teaching moment. Not what I hoped for.
The morning light showed the truth sharper: hungry faces, thin children, elders with hands shaking from cold and fear. If righteousness is going to matter here, it has to fill more than graves. So I gathered what magic I could—every blessing, every drop of Hanspur’s favor—and turned the old, abandoned temple of Erastil into a kitchen. A broken place, but sturdy enough for warmth.
Satinder sent word quietly through the alleys: children first, then the elderly, then whoever could come without drawing cruelty onto themselves. I set the pots, stirred the conjured food until it tasted like more than bare survival, and prayed over each batch. I can feed maybe four hundred souls a day. Not enough to save Drelev, but enough to remind it what hope tastes like. Enough to show the river hasn’t forgotten them.
When the first children crept in—thin, skittish, hungry—I smiled and told them, “There’s always room at the river’s table.” They didn’t smile, not yet. But they ate. And sometimes that’s where hope begins.
