Backstory

by Tonic the Harmonic

Backstory: Tonic comes from simple beginnings where he owned a small tavern on the furthest outskirts of any neighboring city. This tavern was along a single road that had only two rooms for rent for weary travelers. His main source of income was not from the pub or from renting these rooms, but from the blue moon musical performances he and his daughter, Gin, would bestow upon the region. Their duet was known by many as Gin the Violin and Tonic the Harmonic or Gin and Tonic for short. One day around midday/dusk, Gin and Tonic were practicing their ques, chords, and routines for the upcoming blue moon performance. Roughly a dozen or so paladins from a neighboring township came into the tavern looking for a person of interest. They demanded a years worth of the tavern registry. Tonic has an oath as a bard and an innkeeper in that he does not sell out his loyal patrons. He refused to cooperate with the paladins. Seconds later, he was brought to his knees within inches of his life. The paladins did not care for the lives of these tieflings and were going to get what they wanted regardless. "WHAT HAVE YOU DON........." were Tonic's last words before taking a mace to the head and blacking out. Leaving him with the final image of a paladin driving a longsword through Gin's abdomen.

Tonic awoke to find the remnants of his tavern burnt to the ground. The paladins planned to finish what was left of him in a fire. They were unaware that he was fire resistant. In a panic, Tonic immediately started digging through soot and burnt foundation attempting to recall Gin's last whereabouts. Upon lifting a burnt wooden panel, all he found was his harmonica and Gin's bloodstained violin (tiefling Bard instruments encompassing similar fire resistance traits with race).

*Four years after the fire* Tonic refuses to give up on the hope that Gin may still be out there and alive. After searching every city and village far and wide, and even the township in which the paladins attacked. He was unable to find neither Gin nor the paladins responsible. Exhausted and defeated, he finally returned to where his tavern once stood. To his surprise, there stood a very old tree right where his tavern used to be. It was much older tree than what it should actually be. Attached to the tree was a letter. Before grabbing the letter, Tonic leaned his daughters violin against the tree along with campsite supplies. He grabbed the letter and it read, "If you want any answers at all, head to the island of Serasol. Not all hope is in vain, the blue moon will rise again." At the very bottom, the initials, "DCM" were inscribed. With a newfound hope, Tonic immediately set fourth towards the nearest port to acquire more about this Serasol. As he reached for Gin's violin, he noticed a butterfly along the bridge of the fiddle. (FINISH TOMORROW)
