Reforging

by Lady Protector Pyrrha Hyperion

It has been long. And hard. And so very worth it.
The longer I walk among mortals, the more I see their flaws. Unjustified arrogance. Depthless greed. Sniveling cowardice. Blind foolishness. Merciless cruelty. And yet, someone always reminds me there are reasons to protect them. That I am not flawless myself. After all, my beloved mother herself proved fallible. If the creator is spoiled, how can I, the creation, be perfect?
So I've been fighting. Fighting for all of them, the good and the bad. Fighting for myself. Fighting for tomorrow. For through all this bloodshed, all this intrigue, all these battles against monsters and men, all this political fencing with remorseless schemers and misguided sages, there is one thing that has become clear to me. I don't want to bring everything down in flames, burn it all to the ground. Not anymore. I want to cast it on the anvil, make something new and beautiful. As I reforged my Miracle, my armor, so do I wanna reforge these lands and their people. Bring together what was broken. Give the misshappen new shape. Create a new purpose. The Lady Protector has turned from a pointless title and showoff to a manifested truth. Zradelle. Hopefully East Zothlan. Perhaps Uppland.
We have all struggled with our goals. With what can be sacrificed, what must be safeguarded, how far we're willing to go, what is worth protecting. I do not think we have arrived to a common end yet. Nor can I say that I am right and that it is Fearna, Niah or Rana who is wrong. But I feel like I finally know what to work towards.
I cannot save everyone. But I can damn well strive for a better world. I can damn well accept that I myself am gifted, in war and in leadership. And I can damn well fight through and lead them to something new and greater. Someone may take over after that, but the journey is my turn at the helm.
A part of this future has already been written. The rest, I will scribe myself upon the pages of history.

Pyrrha, the first paladin I've ever played (outside of an oneshot where I used a premade one) was originally envisioned as a fallen Valkyrie type of character, someone on a mission from above or on a self-imposed quest to bring punishment from the skies; indeed, "Red Valkyrie" as well as the hair and to an extent choice of weapon (she was initially a shieldmaiden, but I ended up using a two-handed polearm rather than a shield) are carryovers from the original concept, although using the nickname/title in the game is rather unlikely. In the end, she turned out to be a lot nicer than her original form. I ended up leaning a lot on the "restitution" tenet of the Vengeance oath, and while she still has her mission and can be ruthless and unforgiving with the right (or rather the wrong) kind of enemy, not hesitating to hack them up and feeling no remorse whatsoever for it, her kindness, caring attitude and sense of responsibility ended up taking the spotlight. In part, that had to do with the other characters in her party and the general feeling of the campaign's first sessions nudging her towards the role of mother and caretaker, and I took it from there. Suffice to say, it still fits who she really is, and she's still more than capable of taking bloody oaths or delivering brutal smite criticals. Her art ended up being mostly Titania from Fire Emblem. Even though I have never played a Fire Emblem game and didn't know of Titania until I stumbled on her while searching for images, she turned out to be really close to what I had pictured in my head, and so was a natural fit. I even changed her favorite weapon from a longspear to a halberd to make Titania an even better lookalike for Pyrrha. The references and hints to Greek myths delivered the rest. Pyrrha means "the red" in ancient Greek (and also happens to be the female survivor of the mythology's cataclysm story and mother to Hellen, ancestor of all the Greeks) and is associated with fire, an important motif for the character. The horse's name, Adrastea, is also ancient Greek and was an alias of Nemesis, a fitting goddess for Pyrrha's more violent side.

These have been a hectic few weeks. I had avoided West Zothlan for a while; the wound of the Dark Lands is ever fresh, and being there is difficult, not to mention that as far as the Church of Purity is concerned, their presence there was limited. But I ...
