Personal history

Jean Giovannoni would, and still does, talk to anyone. She’s always been very good at it. As a kid she’d wander away from her family constantly and when they found her she always had made new friends. She’d talk random strangers into getting her ice cream. She once talked a pair of police into giving her a ride because she’d never been in a police car before. All before she turned seven.
Everyone thought she would calm down as she got older. Nothing could have been further from the truth. In middle school she was on a first name basis with most of her teachers. In high school she was voted “most likely to convince you”. She led her school’s debate team to three state championships. All her classmates bet Jean would go to law school. But she took the road less traveled by. At 19 Jean became the youngest sports agent in history. Before she was 25 she had an enviable list of clients. She made you like her then she took you to the bank. Eventually she began selling her services brokering real estate deals and major construction contracts. She negotiated for Boeing, for major defense contractors, for Amazon. She spearheaded album deals for Sapphire and Beyonce. Once she even negotiated a cease fire in a civil war.
 
Then the K’thali arrived. They appeared in the skies over multiple cities announcing they came in peace. They weren’t even a military force. They were, believe it or not, an entertainment company scouting new locations. Their technology was so advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic, Malvan level. They asked to discuss broadcast rights for the planet. Jean was chosen as part of the UN negotiating team.
 
The negotiations were broadcast live on the K’thali homewords. For some reason the K’thali LOVED Jean. Her Q-Rating on their home planet was through the roof. And the K’thali have strong views on the ownership of intellectual properties but not so much on the physical. As soon as they negotiated broadcast rights for their homeworld they kidnapped Jean and flew off. Over the next few years they implanted her with devices that gave Jean unprecedented strength and toughness. Then they dumped her back on Earth and started filming her. But in the time she was gone the world had been through some changes. Doctor Destroyer ruled now. Heroes were all but nonexistent. Jean, now known as Field Effect, found herself fighting as an underdog against impossible odds. The ratings were through the roof!
 
Jean is the star of “Reluctant Hero, The Field Effect story”. If she doesn’t do anything heroic for a while she gets teleported to war zones or bank robberies or metahuman battles. If she doesn’t smile enough the implanted voices in her head start giving her stage directions. She can’t do her old job anymore if she can get teleported out of the middle of a tight negotiating session so she has, reluctantly, embraced her new job. Thankfully the K’thali pay her for her time.

Education

Jean has a bachelors in linguistics, a bachelors in communications and a law degree, though she never took the bar.

Mental Trauma

Well, she got kidnapped by an alien race and implanted with strange tech then dumped back on Earth. She hears constant voices in her head telling her what to do and every once in a while she's teleported to war zones against her will.

Intellectual Characteristics

Jean prefers to talk. Jean almost ALWAYS prefers to talk. Experience has taught her that she can talk her way out of almost anything and so that is her goto solution whenever possible.

Morality & Philosophy

To be honest, Jean doesn’t want to be a hero. Mind you, she’s a decent person. She just has other goals. But the K’thali don’t allow that and Doctor Destroyer has shut most other doors. She HAS to be a hero or a villain. And if those are her only two options she’ll take hero every time. She’s slowly getting into her new job and she certainly has the power level to handle it. But it’s taking some getting used to. Thankfully she’s managed to talk her way out of some fights and survive the others... so far. She’s really good at the talking part.
 
However, as unskilled as Jean is in combat she excels at communication. To quote her mother “Jean could not only sell ice cubes to Eskimos, she could get them to pay for delivery”. Sometimes her attempts at negotiation get shut off by her production team as they want more action but she prefers negotiation to combat. Her being a polyglot helps.

Motivation

Jean started out being motivated by, well, being paid and enjoying using her newfound powers. But the more she acts the hero, the more she realizes she likes it. She's slowly becoming a real hero, willing to sacrifice for others. But she's not there yet.
