Torric is a very happy go lucky Elf, taking very little seriously – at least on the surface. He is descended from a long line of adept wizards within the elven race – and, though a practitioner of magic…..has never really fitted in.
Once it became apparent that Torric was able to wield magic he was set to study along with those others of his race to further improve his skill. He quickly grew bored of the lessons however and became ever more rebellious when he realised that the scope of teaching was flawed. Everything was segmented….categorised – and this didn’t fit his view of how magic worked. Magic was just “stuff” – you manipulated it to get an effect and that was all there was to it – like tricks. Needless to say this didn’t sit well with his mentors. With a small amount of sadness, and when it was deemed he had learned enough not to be a danger to himself or others, he petitioned his family to travel and study in the schools throughout the realms – secretly hoping to find a group of like minded people to vindicate his views !
At this point when leaving he was asked to deliver some missives from his family along with a letter of introduction to the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors in Waterdeep. Again however, as cosmopolitan as the school was, and as varied the learning, all was too structured and rigid to his mind…..it was stifling and just felt fundamentally wrong. Needless to say he struck out again to find more schools and views…..he has probably by now been in almost every school of magic in the lands.
A side effect of this travel however is that at each point of journeying from one school to another he has always had missives to deliver….and in doing so became something of an unofficial member of the Harpers…it was their letters he was delivering though he never knew that at the time…having survived a few shakedowns and refusing to divulge the fact he carried any such documents as a “test” he was finally invited in to a meeting under the pretense of an interested scholar.
This is where he met his current “handler”. They wanted to place a new face in the Cult of the Dragon, as there were a lot of concerning rumours of espionage and arms shipments along with a number of mysterious murders happening at the time. I was an unknown in the Harpers at this point and very few (other than recipients and senders of the letters) were even aware of my connections to them – so I was ideal – and it beat bouncing his head off a wall debating with stuffy old mages !
I managed to ingratiate myself to a know member of the Cult of the Dragon during a bar brawl, helping him to escape the subsequent search by the authorities with some minor tricks (illusions !). after that I started to work for them as a twix (a go-between) very much like I was doing for the harpers – though this time I copied each missive and dropped them off with my Harper contacts….
In all its working out quite well…I get paid by two organisations for doing very little…and am free to pursue my own understanding of the way “stuff” works
…..happy days all round…..
