Mortal life

He puts the amulet around your neck and whispers in your ear how much he loves you. In the mirror, the sapphire’s glint almost blinds you. It makes it hard to see him. You turn but he is gone, nothing but the gentle peel of his laughter and the memory of his breath on your neck. You run after him, down the long corridor of elegant wood panels, knowing you will not find him as much as he is lost in the darkness.
 

Past occupation

This evening the charity society has brought you to a workhouse to give food to the children and participate in a service. It is all to show the gentry that the poor are being dealt with, and that even if they do not have much food their souls are nourished with God’s grace. But as you look at the thin faces on the benches behind you, it is clear that God is not here. Although you cannot help but think how blessed you are, you are able to leave this place they can not. This is not a chapel of course, the workhouse has only one main hall, but at least these souls can receive the holy sacrament. Few of them seem to be listening, though. The men sit on one side, the women and children on the other, and they are both more interested in each other than the words of the vicar. You are about to tut at such lascivious behavior, but then you realize these are families, separated by the workhouse except for this precious moment when a father can wave to his child and a wife can see her husband again. You clutch your basket of bread and cheese for the children closer, and cannot help but think it is not enough.
 

Past trauma

You taste dirt along with blood as your face hits the ground. They began by punching you, but now they swing wide kicks into your face and stomach. You curl into a ball, try to cover your head, waiting for it to end. You never should have tried to short change them, but that isn’t the real reason. They think you deceived them, speaking out against a man. So now these men, who pride themselves on never hitting a woman, are kicking you because you won the argument. Still, you took two of them down before they got you on the ground. In the end you will get the last word.
 

Embrace

She is beautiful, but not in any common way. Her features are set with power and passion, her grace that of a warrior. Even though she is dressed like anyone else, she is a creature out of time, like some goddess of war. She walks towards you and slaps you hard across the face, throwing you to the ground. You leap up, ready to return the blow but she simply isn’t there. Then suddenly her hand is at your throat and lifting you off your feet. You stare her in the eye and cough out that she should do her worst. She smiles and tells you her sire will be so pleased with you. Then she sinks her teeth into your neck.
