My Story before I came to Dragon's Wings

by Elemi

I was born in the small village of Enalgroth, Teitanga. My mother is an established elven seer, and my father is a human carpenter who sang silly songs every now and then. When I was born, there were many expectations on me, and I didn't meet a single one of them. I couldn't handle the intense study sessions that my mother puts me through, and I had even less of an idea what my mother meant by the 'Fey'. My father, on the other hand, tried to make me take up carpentry, but everything that I've ever made was an artistic wreck. I think that even a goblin could have made better art than me! Instead of studying, or trying to carve shapes into wood, I decided to do something a bit more fun, and that is playing pranks on people. I would often play pranks on the elders with my childhood friend, Mar.

By the time I was almost an adult, I was still playing pranks on the villagers, but there was one prank that got out of hand quickly. There was this one villager named Belben that isn't quite liked in our village. He would often call our village's practices and customs 'primitive', or 'outdated', and was generally disrespectful to everyone. Mar and I decided to put Belben in his place by replacing all of the cargo in one of his wagons with stones. But the plan went downhill when Mar knocked one of the lamps that we were using for light, and lit the entire carriage on fire! We slipped away in the chaos, and nobody saw us, or at least, I hoped that nobody saw us.

After that incident, we laid a bit low, trying not to bring too much attention to ourselves, because if we got caught, it would have really dire consequences. During this time, it did seem like Belben was suspicious of us, and I tried to play innocent. After a few weeks of this, I went with Mar to go to a nearby town to sell some of my father's works, and Mar's home grown crops. When night came, we moved our wagon off of the road and into a nearby ditch to camp out the night. After a few hours, I heard some rustling in the bushes, and decided to check it out on my own. Sadly, I couldn't find whatever was in there, and decided to head back, only to find that several men were approaching our camp with weapons drawn. I didn't even try to warn Mar, I just ran away. I would remember every step that I took away from that camp. The rustling of the trees, the bushes that brushed against my side, the sounds of the wildlife around me, and the pounding of the dirt on my feet would continue to haunt me to this very day.

I kept running until my legs gave out on me, and after a moment's rest, I had noticed a bunch of paper scattered on the side of the road, they had all looked the same, and as I picked one up to read it, my blood started to boil. These papers were bounty notices, on me and Mar, to be brought back to Enalgroth, dead or alive. And the reward would be paid out by Belben. I eventually made it back to the village a few days later, and the first thing that I tried to do was look for Belben, which wasn't a hard thing to do because he was sitting in the middle of the village square, looking extremely smug. He didn't seem to be pleased to see me, and for good reason, as I wrestled him to the ground and proceeded to punch the daylights out of him. Punch. Punch. Punch. I didn't stop when he started to bleed. I didn’t stop when I felt bones crack under my fists. I didn’t even stop when he started to plead for his life. I continued to pummel him until my parents tackled me off of him. While on the floor, I took a look at my handiwork, and I doubt that even the greatest healer could restore him back to normal. He seemed unconscious, but I knew that he was still alive.

I somehow got my parents off of me, and walked away. My parents demanded to know why I did what I did, but I didn't say a word back to them. I just continued walking until I was out of the village, and on the road. I didn't know where I was going, but after what I just did, I was sure that I was never allowed into the village again. After a few days, I stumbled on the trade city of Bhamtarum. I went from guild to guild, seeking an apprenticeship as well as a place to live, and eventually one of them had accepted me. The guild was a lesser known leatherworking guild, and I was set to work with one of the Meisters, a gnome named Wilpos. I spent a bit over three years at this guild, and I had learned quite a bit about leathermaking. I was able to produce my own works. They didn't look the best, but they worked well for function.

One night however, I was working late at night on a big project with Wilpos, and I accidentally knocked over a shelf full of chemicals directly on top of Wilpos. I dove on top of him to try to help, but all it did was cause more of a ruckus, and have more flasks fall on top of him and me. I suffered a severe burn on my lower back, but Wilpos was dead. The next day, I gave the news to the guild that I had accidentally killed my meister. Since it was an accident, they wouldn't subject me to the courts, but I was banished from the guild, as well as any other guild in Baranthum, and all the gold I had in my name was taken away from me.

Being exiled from yet another place, I made my way to Vul Therin, where I quickly ran into some trouble with the local crime syndicate by borrowing some money from the wrong person. To pay off my debt, I had to do some work for them, and that is where I had learned most of my skills as a rogue. I had learned that I was really good at staying out of sight, and getting into places that I shouldn't be. The main job that I did for them was to gather information from whoever they wanted. Sometimes that would be sneaking into the guard's quarters and finding their patrol routes and schedules for the week, or it would be tailing a merchant and finding his trade secrets. There were also times where I had to kill though. I'm not proud of it, but a job is a job.

After two more years of this, I decided that I needed to get out of this line of work, or it would be the end of me. The answer came in the form of a notice put up in a nearby tavern: A notice recruiting adventurers in another continent called Ysgard, far far away from Teitanga and everything here. I snuck aboard the next boat, and walked to the guild hall. And I continue to be here. This is my new home, and I intend to make this place my home for many many years to come. I hope that I don't mess up this chance that I've been given.
