Personal history

I was found by a ranger named Bremen Domergue in the remains of a hatchery beneath the Gimlin mountains. To this day I don’t know who bred us and why, or who tossed the place. My closest guess is that whoever destroyed my brothers and sisters probably thought they were eliminating a great evil from the world. Perhaps we were created for a destructive purpose. All that really existed there was the potential for evil, but in my experience potential is enough to get you shot at. I’ve been shot at plenty.
I’m lucky Bremen found me and not some crazy zealot. There are a lot of people who would have found a hatchery incompletely ransacked and finished the job.
Bremen raised me alongside his own son. Trelain was older than me, but I quickly caught up and within a few years I was the one looking down to talk to him. Trelain was far more attuned to nature than I was. For me the forest was a tool for hunting, to read like a map while tracking prey or to hide myself while lying in wait. Trelain didn’t just use the forest like I did. He became a part of it. He could even take on the form of some of its beasts. He didn’t eat the meat of the animals we caught, and many was the time he stayed my hand from letting an arrow fly when he knew we had already caught all that we needed.
We hunted elk with Bremen in the forest and sold their pelts and meat in the nearest towns. I got a lot of odd looks from people. A dragonborn riding into town with two humans was certainly an odd sight.
 
Trelain and I both signed on as scouts during the War with the Immortal Kings. Originally only Trelain were recruited, but by then Bremen was old and nearly blind, so Trelain brought me instead. We were with the same battalion for two and a half years. I spent a lot of that time under a lot of suspicion, and I think the only reason any of the battalion warmed to me at all was that Trelain vouched for me constantly. I was also pretty damn good as shooting down herds of undead that might have overwhelmed our forces otherwise.
 
The war was harder on Trelain than it was on me. He was the son of a huntsman, and even so he didn’t like to watch animals get killed. Watching it happen to undead creatures was little better. He didn’t do much killing himself when it came down to it, and I saved his ass a couple of times because he froze up during a raid. He was alive because of me, certainly, but I could tell he was unsettled by how easily I committed terrible acts of violence to do it. Not all of that violence was against the undead.
 
When we came home our city showered us with gratitude, and we played our part for a little while. But we didn’t really feel like it was our town anymore, and both of us soon left it. This time we didn’t leave together. I wish I had spoken to him, but I had no thoughts on the war. For a long time, I thought this meant that I was stronger than him. It meant nothing of the kind.
