THE THIRSTY MAIDEN is where Augen, a.k.a. "Hood", reminisces her shitty upbringing (if one can call it that) as a Virgin Sacrifice for the Cult of Negua after a fifth drink of " the strongest I can afford for 2 goldpieces ". The barkeep is sympathetic. She once threatened a drunk dwarf out of his tavern when he was getting too aggressive.
This fuels motivation for tomorrow's sting operation to 'enhance' the cargo of a foreign merchant, who is to provide grain for a monotheistic cult in the South. The cult in question, a bunch of Lurrak fanatics, brainwashes young boys from the outer ring of the city. Promising a better life, where there is never a shortage of grain.
We'll see how they intend to keep their promise when the ship comes to them, bringing not just grain, but also rats carrying a plethora of diseases harmful to grains only. No one ignores Izaea.
She considers herself lucky that lone ranger and future ex-mentor Belsazar was cut off and thrown out of a nearby tavern and decided to take out his anger issues on the cult that was about to sacrifice her. Behind said tavern. Because it was supposedly hallowed ground. Not because, oh, the high priest was a barely functioning alcohol and really needed a drink after “ a long day of work ”.
It would seem that alcohol saves the day in many ways. Always has, always will. She orders a sixth drink. (Salut, Hordi)
She makes a note of the name of the merchant in a tiny book she keeps. Might come in handy later.
Belsazar taught her many things. How it was important to keep tab of who you meet, who you affect. How to survive. How to fight. Some things were taught indirectly. When not to fight. When to play the long game. That tactical planning is important.
His brash, impatient nature and relentless chase of pleasures, trying to fill the hollow in his soul, became a point of friction between them after five years. They went their separate ways. On occasion, such as this one, she wonders about him. Wonders if he went back to the town he came from, to serve again as a guard for the lord he fell in love with, once.
She finishes her sixth drink. Time to go back to Auzoan. There, she will meet with some operatives she hired from the local guild of thieves to create a distraction while she plants the rats inside his cargo. Got to support local business.
The rats will also have to be picked up. Though the disease was her idea, she felt that no one else but the cult should have to suffer. So, as to make sure only a specific patch was targeted, she asked a trustworthy potion-brewer – perhaps a friend - to come up with a way that the disease would only take effect once the grain was in the hands of the cult. It had taken months to calculate a reliable timeframe for the delivery of grain to the cult.
Guess everyone has their own hobby.
She gets up and supposes that sixth drink was perhaps too ambitious; she stumbles and just barely remembers to pick up her longbow.
Tomorrow morning is going to be though. She prays Argia will be sympathetic to her future headache
