Rumpu remembers three things from his early childhood: he was told fairytales/stories about heroes and their adventures every evening, his favorite shirt had a tag on it that read Rumpu Kuivaus (his name) and that one night pirate king Paan persuaded him to join him and other lost boys on the island of Shoha. Paan promised him all kinds of adventures and told him that there were no adults in Shoha, and of course the best thing about it was that you'd never have to grow up there. So Rumpu left his parents and went to live that life of freedom and adventure.
He remembers many things about his time in Shoha, but doesn't really want to think about it. After he learned that magic keeps almost everything together there, he has come to question his time in Shoha, and can't really tell anymore what was real and what wasn't (even more so after he learned the true nature of the island).
When Rumpu turned 14, Paan lured him deep into the forest and tried to kill him, like he did to all of the boys when they were about to grow up. Rumpu managed to escape only thanks to captain Rhys Garfo and his crew, who attacked Shoha the same day in an attempt to save the lost boys. Rumpu fled the scene and took Paan's pan flute with him. He ran to Garfo's ship (on his way there he tripped, that's how he got his scar) and hid there, but fell asleep before any of them came back.
Rumpu was found by Garfo's first mate Hajnal Smee a while after they had already left Shoha. Garfo decided to let Rumpu stay on his ship for a while. Rumpu became quite close with Smee, but never really got along with the rest of the crew. He was also way too stubborn and reckless to be a sailor, according to Garfo.
After a year of sailing, Garfo sent Rumpu to the Military Academy of Kilen to study a profession for himself. Rumpu did just that and decided to become an assassin so he could some day get his revenge and kill pirate king Paan. Of course he never told that to Garfo.
After studying for a few years Rumpu heard that Garfo was planning on a new attack to Shoha, so he decided to join his crew again and finally confront Paan and save the new lost boys.

Mental Trauma
Rumpu spent his childhood in Shoha with pirate king Paan and the other lost boys. Paan tried to kill Rumpu when he was 14 years old, and he learned that the boys didn't really stay young forever, but instead, got killed when they were about to grow up. Rumpu escaped Shoha, but wants to go back to kill Paan and save the new lost boys. He believes that it's the only way for him to finally get some peace and ease his own guilt for leaving the other boys behind. He feels terrible guilt for leaving his friends behind when he fled, and assumes they're all dead and killed by Paan, and feels like it's his own fault. Rumpu still associates Shoha strongly with home, and every time he comes across something that reminds him of his time there (something that makes him feel like home, familiar smells, music, etc.), he gets angry with himself for missing the good times in his childhood.

Motivation
Rumpu wants to get his revenge on Paan and help the new lost boys escape. He blames himself for the death of the lost boys and seeks to do anything to ease that guilt. Rumpu is driven by his anger and his main goal at the moment is to kill Paan and put a stop to his actions so that no child would ever have to go through what he did.
