Personal history
Brandt was born to his parents Milia and Hans Nhymestl. Being from a relatively poor farming family, Brandt's incredible size and strength lent itself to farm work. He would spend the majority of his time in the field and any free time he would spend practising swordplay.
By the time he was 16, he was 6' 2" and left home to join the Hastalch Urd, a large stronghold of warriors that acted as protectors for Brandt's homeland. Thanks in large part to his size Brandt became a capable and trusted member of the Urd, enjoying the rank of knight by the time he was 23. While in the Hastalch Urd, he became comfortable with a defensive form of combat, leveraging the reach of a polearm to ward off attacks from himself and others.
Tragedy struck when he was 25, while out with some squires Brandt was attacked by a werewolf, after being knocked unconscious from a blow to the chest Brandt barely made it out with his life. He lost all of his squires in the fight and returned to the Urd with an intense sense of shame and anger. The Urd would be struck again by the werewolf, it attacked the Urd's stronghold during the night and managed to overpower the knights stationed, having been caught off-guard. All the knights stationed would lose their lives save Brandt himself. Not only was he left alive with little to live for, but he was also cursed with the beast's lycanthropy.
He would eventually be imprisoned for his troubles, the crown believing that surviving such an attack could only mean desertion. He would escape with a dozen other prisoners and they would be recruited to help stop a world-ending calamity.
After that had been dealt with Brandt still needed to cure his lycanthropy, he tried anything from medicine to magical healing. However, he ended up needing to turn to a hag's profane magic to heal him. She never told him what the price was, it didn't matter to him, he merely wished to sleep soundly once more. Once she cured him however his memories suddenly came back in sharp focus, that night in the Urd fortress, the werewolf didn't return at all. It was Brandt. He had already been infected fighting the werewolf, killing it in a blood-frenzy. He turned again that night and slaughtered his comrades in their beds. Even the few that managed to put up a fight weren't enough to stop his primal wrath.
After this Brandt spent several years as a hermit, learning to live with the crimes that had gone unpunished for all these years.
Once he had figured himself worthy of life among normal folk again, he descended from his mountain and took up work as a lumberjack, chopping away and learning to enjoy the company of others again. After some time he met his wife Lori, a beautiful woman working as a barmaid in his town. Together they had three children, a son named Dieter and two daughters named Dorothy and Jane. They lived well on Brandt's war chest for many years.
When Dieter was 18 he joined the crown forces in a war against a neighbouring kingdom, despite his father's protestation. He ended up dying at war, and Brandt was convinced these were the machinations of the hag. Terrible nightmares plagued the old adventurer and he decided he was going to do something about it. He gathered a party of former associates and they went on a years-long quest to find and kill the hag.
Once he had slew the hag he returned home but did not find the peace he craved. Having abandoned his daughters in their early teens in order to chase what they believed was a mad adventurer's delusions they came to resent their father. He was treated poorly by them no matter how he tried to mend their relationship.
This would be the state of things throughout the remainder of Brandt's time at home, his daughters married and had children of their own, and Brandt would get to see his grandchildren every so often but largely because of his proximity to his wife Lori.
Lori never stopped loving Brandt and understood the importance of his leaving home. She knew that Brandt couldn't rest until he believed their baby boy was avenged, unfortunately, this revenge came at the cost of ignoring his daughters in an equally great time of need.
When Lori passed away Brandt's relationship with his daughters worsened to a breaking point, they moved to put him in a sanitorium to live out the rest of his days.
He would break out of the sanitorium and gather what meagre wealth he had left, finding a vessel looking for adventurer's to join an expeditionary force and figuring it would be better to die doing what he loved.
