Samuel was born to an elvish mother and a human father. Samuel never knew his father but everyone else in his village did… Some sort of military hero from the Batherians that died just before he was born. Of course, he was only a hero to his fellow humans… the elves couldn’t have cared less other than his mother. Tasha was always kind and nurturing to her half-human boy. The other members of the village of Thrawnburg were never so pleasant. They never referred to Samuel by his name. Always as some derogatory term or phrase… Even in front of his mother who had lost so much standing due to her bond with the human man.
It was not until his 13th year of life that Samuel showed something special… a magical affinity. Magic was nowhere near uncommon in Thrawnberg, or the rest of the Elvish Empire for that matter, but Samuel was still special in his own way. Magic usually had to be taught, but not for Samuel. Samuel showed an affinity for multiple schools of magic. From fire bolts to near clerical healing Samuel could perform it all. This allowed him to quickly join the ranks of his town’s militia, which had no effect on his treatment, but did alleviate his suffering with the feelings of strength he quickly developed.
Samuel showed an especially strong affinity for three forms of magic. Casting, Healing, and boosting his melee capabilities to surpass all other members of the village. He was placed on extended watches, difficult patrols, and on the front lines of combat when against overwhelming odds such as drifting giants and goblin mobs. To say Samuel didn’t mind these assignments would be an absolute lie… His hate for the village only grew from these assignments and even has his strength grew from undertaking these tasks, his hatred grew.
Eventually, he was one of the strongest militants of his village. He felt compassion only for his mother and this was proven when the village chief knocked her to the ground… and Samuel went berserk. Impaling the chief on his blade and killing over a dozen of the villages guard. This obviously resulted in him being outcast, which he couldn’t have cared less about, but also led to him being cast aside by his own mother that disowned him before the village that treated her like shit for years… Sam has been treated poorly almost his whole life but his incident was the first that brought him to his knees in tears since childhood.
Samuel left only his armor, weapons, and books to keep him company. The longest journey her has ever taken… walking out of the village he was raised in. He felt true sadness over his mother’s actions, but could never stop loving her. He left only because she wished it… otherwise, he would have killed everyone in Thrawnburg to preserve his way of life.
Shortly after leaving the village, he ran into a barbarian band that wanted to rob him. The owner, Variton, challenged Samul to a duel. Apparently, it was common practice for this group, named the “Sun Horde”, to have their leader challenge the leader of the group being ambushed. Samuel killed this fool with minimal difficulty and took over the barbarian horde accidently in doing so. He knew nothing of the compassion within criminal groups but learned quickly from their servitude and acts of friendship. They treated him as one of their own and he finally felt passion for something other than protecting his mother. He committed acts of murder, theft, and betrayal to ensure his horde was kept safe and happy to reward them for their companionship.
Samuel never lost affection for his mother, even after what happened. He has left several caravans alone going to/from Thrawnburg to ensure their needs were met. He even funds caravans and merchants to go there on occasion that otherwise wouldn’t and provide her with gifts disguised as good deals. He, of course, enforces the requirement that these merchants provide her with the good for the maximum she is willing to pay and inform him and PROVE to him that she is in good help by describing her temperament and speech patterns.
Eventually, his crew secured a merchant ship with hidden guns. This occurred when a caravan went a little too far into the woods with their entire crew… and illegal goods without docking in a proper port. This was the luckiest find the Sun Horde could ever encounter and after selling the materials, they set off on their new career as pirates.
Samuel is aggressive and prefers violence as a method to resolve most issues. This does not make him foolish. He will not tackle a challenge he cannot beat and can use persuasion in place of violence or intimidation when it is the better option. Samuel loves his mother and enjoys his crew. Other than these two things, he cares only to embolden and strengthen himself. He is not a sociopath. He truly wants to seek the betterment of these two and will sacrifice self-pleasure to do so. He does, however, seek the strengthen himself as much as possible. The leader of the Sun Horde must be powerful and this requires selfish actions at times when it comes to loot and finances.
He holds a strong affinity for following the teachings of Uselene and even carries her symbol. He does not know why he has this affinity but suspects this is the source of his strength and why he uncovers magical secrets without study.
Since becoming pirates, the Sun horde has used and eclipse for their flag with the moon being replaced by a skull.
