Halvor Thorsson, son of Ranulf, viking raider of the scatterback, has always had his sights set on the sea. As a young boy, Halvor heard stories of the great Pirate King Kale Tindle. Typically told as a story to warn young raiders of the perils of sailing and pirating, cautioning that too much time at sea will begat the wrath of demons and undead sent from the ocean herself. However, the tale had the opposite effect on Halvor. All he wanted to do was to meet the Pirate King and join him on a legendary adventure so that he too may have his story told for generations. As such, he was eager at a young age to join the warbands of his village to sail the seas for plunder and glory. Quickly rising to lead his own warband and command his own longboat, it was apparent that Halvor was going to be no average man.
His reputation began to grow as a madman and fearless sailor, with a near fanatical obsession with sailing and raiding for no other reason than to have a story legendary enough for the scalds to sing for eternity. Men quickly feared joining his warband, as Halvor was known to sail regardless of weather and caution. Halvor did not care, for the sea whispered to him and guided him on his path to glory
As the seasons changed and years went by, Halvor was left unsatisfied. All of this killing, plundering, raiding, and pirating left only stories of strong Vikings defeating weak sailing men and the off chance of Triton and sea goblin raids. Among the rest of the Vikings, Halvor was considered an outcast, too crazy to be trusted… and yet still remarkably dangerous, as he had always returned regardless if he has sailed alone or with a warband. But Halvor was not content. Was there no challenge for him great enough to place his name in the same halls of infamy as the Pirate King Kale Tindle?
It seemed all was for not, until one day an incredibly fierce storm battered his homeland. The Vikings chose to feast in their meadhall to wait out the storm. It was there that Halvor overheard a rumor of a captain resembling Kale slaying a demon. Equal parts enraged and overjoyed at the news Halvor went charging out of the hall and hoisted sails in the perilous weather – hearing once again the call of the sea guiding him to greatness. Unbeknownst to Halvor, the storm followed him into the ocean and the Vikings watched him from ashore in disbelief as they heard him cackling and arguing with the storm, fighting rain and waves alike; truly, Halvor had completely lost his mind... and would die alone at sea.
Day and night were indistinguishable to Halvor as he fought to sail through the storm. Lightning and wind tore through his sails and Halvor could do nothing else but laugh and cry out in joy – surviving this storm would be the beginning of his legend. This realization turned his battle against its power into a profession of his love and gratefulness. He climbed the remainder of his mast and extended his arms wide as he embraced the rage of the mighty storm around him. After what seemed like an eternity of shouting compliments of beauty and grace out into the wind, a hole broke in the hurricane – an eye to the storm. There in the sunlight basking down into Halvor did he see her in all of her deadly beauty – the storm herself, slowly descending from the sky to embrace him.
Halvor was awakened by the cries of gulls circling above him. He was adrift on the remains of his broken ship. Just as he began to question if this was reality, or the afterlife, his hand grasped the handle of a mighty battleaxe. As he inspected the weapon, a mad grin spread across his face from ear to ear, as the weapon attuned to his soul – revealing itself to be a gift from his one true love – Umberlee
